The week before the Ferry Shipping Summit I was in Patagonia, and when our ship arrived in Puntas Arenas I was surprised to see a very old European ferry alongside.

The LOGOS HOPE was built as GUSTAV VASA in 1973 for Halmstad-based Lion Ferry. She has this unmistakeably Nobiskrug Werft look. Many ferries were built in this yard in Rendsburg, Germany.

After a career between Germany and Sweden she was sold to Smyril Line, to become the famous NORRÖNA.

In 2004 she became LOGOS HOPE. The ship is operated on behalf of OM Ships International by GBA Ships e.V., a private, non-profit, Christian charitable organisation registered in Germany. GBA stands for “Gute Bücher für Alle”, Good Books for All. The old ferry features a mobile bookstore, as a part of international Christian outreach movement.

Incat Crowther To Build A 35m Catamaran Passenger Ferry for Samsø Rederi

The 296-pax vessel will operate between the Aarhus and the island of Samsø.

The intention of the new operation is to bolster tourism and trade between the island and the mainland.

As such, Incat Crowther was charged with developing an economically responsible solution. The vessel is optimized for high durability, low maintenance and efficient operation, whilst delivering a high level of passenger comfort and amenity.

The main deck features a large aft deck with double-decker racks for 60 bicycles. An additional 11 bikes can be stowed on the foredeck.

The vessel will be powered by a pair of MAN D2862 LE463 main engines, each producing 1029kW. She will operate at 25 knots at a modest MCR to reduce load on the engines and reduce maintenance intervals. Maximum speed will be 29.5 knots. The Incat Crowther hulls have been designed specifically for high efficiency and low fuel burn.

Baleària And Fred. Olsen Express Introduce The First Smart LNG Ferry Between Huelva And The Canary Islands

By 2019 Newsletter Week 12

The shipping companies Baleària and Fred. Olsen Express will incorporate the first ferry powered by dual gas engines on the routes that operate between Huelva and the Canary Islands, starting next Sunday March 24, at the departure of 20h from the port of Huelva.

The ro-pax NAPOLES has returned from the shipyard in Gibraltar after having received a new dual-fuel LNG engine.
She will replace the MARTIN I SOLER.

The remotorising of the ferry has been an important piece of engineering, with a price tag of EUR 12.5 million.

On the other hand, technological innovations have been made on the ship to turn it into a ‘smart ship’. Among the main novelties are, the digitalisation of all the signage, as well as the access to the staterooms by means of a QR code that customers receive on their mobile phone (and which prevents them from having to go through reception), and digital entertainment on demand.
