RoRo Merry-Go-Round

DFDS and CLdN have sold ships to each other, and chartered them back.

  • Ship: MELEQ renamed ACACIA SEAWAYS (Lithuania).
  • Ownership: from CLdN to DFDS.
  • Charter: ACACIA SEAWAYS has been chartered back for continued operation on CLdN’s Zeebrugge-Purfleet-Esbjerg route.
  • Remark: she is a sistership of GARDENIA SEAWAYS and TULIPA SEAWAYS (Vlaardingen – Felixstowe)
  • Ship: GOTHIA SEAWAYS renamed MAXINE (Isle of Man).
  • Ownership: from DFDS to CLdN.
  • Charter: MAXINE has been chartered back to DFDS for continued service in DFDS’ Baltic network during April-May and is expected to join DFDS’s new Calais – Sheerness freight-only service scheduled to commence on 1 June.
  • Remark: She is one of the 3 Wagenborg vessels which were built for the StoraEnso Zeebrugge – Göteborg service. A company within the CLdN sphere owns sister vessel SOMERSET (operated by Stena Line).
  • Ship: UNDINE renamed LIDER TRABZON.
  • Ownership: from CLdN to unknown.

Moby Discontinues U.S. Lawsuit

Moby also announced that “is voluntarily discontinuing its lawsuit against a group of U.S. and European asset management firms because the lawsuit has facilitated productive discussions between Moby and its creditors including the defendants towards reaching a long-sought agreement on Moby’s restructuring”. More CLdN Capacity On Ireland and UK Routes

CLdN increases capacity by the introduction of additional sailings on its Irish and UK routes.

Zeebrugge – Dublin: from 2 to 3 sailings a week

Zeebrugge – Killingholme: a new Friday sailing (7 sailings per week)

Zeebrugge – Purfleet: extra weekend sailing on Sunday (12 sailings per week).

Two vessels have rejoined the CLdN fleet: WILHELMINE is no longer chartered by P&O Ferries and CADENA 3 (ex MASSIMO MURA) is no longer sailing for Tirrenia Cargo.

After working for Grendi, SEVERINE is now on charter to GNV.

Port of Zeebrugge: Growth of 3% in 2020

Zeebrugge stayed 100% operational during the pandemic. Roro traffic suffered because of the reduced handling of new cars. This drop was compensated by a strong growth in container traffic, LNG and solid bulk.

The port took a lot of initiatives to be Brexit-proof and invested twice as much into new infrastructure.

Modal shift: the port sees an important growth of rail connections, and estuary waterway connections went up 4.2%

CLdN

  • Added a call in Zeebrugge on the route Leixões – Rotterdam, allowing cargo to be transferred to Esbjerg and Göteborg.
  • Zeebrugge – Dublin: from 2 to 3 sailings with so-called “Brexit busters”
  • Zeebrugge – Cork: new route
  • Zeebrugge – Santander: ships VALENTINE en CELANDINE = +40% capacity

P&O Ferries

  • End of ropax service Zeebrugge – Hull, means end of accompanied freight

DFDS

  • Introduction of FLANDRIA SEAWAYS on 4 October 2020, Zeebrugge – Göteborg

CLdN Continues to Add Capacity on Continent – UK Routes

CLdN is to step up preparations for the end of the Brexit transitional phase on 31st December 2020 by introducing additional capacity on its UK routes.

  • Last week 25% extra capacity was added on both the Rotterdam – London and Rotterdam – Humberside routes.
  • In addition, and from week 42, an extra vessel will be deployed and thus a third daily sailing will be added on the Zeebrugge – London route to serve the growing demand.

One of the reasons for the high demand is the fact that British companies are preparing for a no-deal end of the Brexit transition period by stockpiling essential goods.

CONDOR LIBERATION Tests Portsmouth

Andrew Williamson, Passenger Operations Manager at Portsmouth International Port sent us this picture of an unusual visitor: CONDOR LIBERATION.

This was part of contingency planning to familiarise the port with handling the high-speed ferries, if Condor Ferries were unable to berth in Poole for any reason.

CLdN to start of a new RoRo-service: a triangle trade between Leixões (PT) – Dublin (IE) and Liverpool (UK)

With effect from week 37, CLdN will operate one sailing per week from Leixões to Dublin, followed by calling Liverpool.

  • Threat of disruption on the short Channel routes is an opportunity
  • Brexit: administrative burden when using land bridge solutions
  • British Government desires to promote unaccompanied solutions
  • CLdN anticipates direct EU trade between Iberia and Ireland, linking into Liverpool, UK will offer environmental benefits and be less prone to disruptions or interruptions as seen on the short straights.
  • Schedule: Leixões (Friday) – Dublin (Monday) – Liverpool (Monday) – Dublin (Wednesday) – Leixões (Friday).
