Today we go back to Ancona, in 1998.

KRALJICA MIRA

Built as HAMMERSHUS in 1965, by Meyer Werft.
Started to serve the route Copenhagen-Rönne-Ystad.
Did several seasons with TT-Line between Travemunde and Bornholm.
Left the Baltic in 1993, and ended up in the Adriatic.
In 1994 she sailed for Sem Maritime Company’s traffic between Split – Ancona.
Scrapped in 2005.

Sister vessel to the previous ferry, she was built in 1977.

In 1997 I travelled on several ferries between Italy, Elba, Corsica and Sardinia. Let’s look at some Corsica Ferries photographed during these journeys.

ELBA EXPRESS (1987, ANNE-LISE)

Built by Westamarin she was used by Elba Ferries between Piombino and Portferraio.

Now owned by Balearia, she is still in service as FORMENTERA DIRECT on the route Ibiza – Formentera.

CORSICA EXPRESS II (1996)

At that time, she was one year old, serving the route Genoa-Bastia.

In 2015 she was sold to a Sea Jets company, as PAROS JET. She can still be activated for service.

SARDINIA VERA (1975, STENA ATLANTICA)

One of four ferries built by Rickmers, she arrived in Italy in 1996, after years of operation for Canadian Marine Atlantic. For Sardinia Ferries she operated between Livorno, Civitavecchia and Golfo Aranci.

In 2001 she was chartered to Conseil General de Seine Maritime, Dieppe, France, for the Transmanche ferry service between Dieppe and Newhaven.

She is still operational in the Med and currently laid up in Piombino.

Last week we started with some 1998 pictures from Mykonos. Let’s go back to Greece this week, same year, same Cycladic island.

SUPERFERRY II (built 1974 as PRINCE LAURENT)

This former Channel ferry was built as PRINCE LAURENT for the Oostende-Dover route, operated by the Belgian State-owned RMT. In 1992 she was sold to Strintzis and was sent to Perama for rebuilding. After Oostende Rafina became her second home port, from which she still operates today for Golden Star Ferry.

PENELOPE A (built 1972 as HORSA)

Another Channel veteran is this former HORSA, built for Sealink. Her second life started in 1992 when she started to sail for Agoudimos Lines.

In 2014 she was advertised for sale and laid up in Eleusis. She’s still moored there, side by side with Nel Lines’ MYTILENE.

They will probably go to the scrapyard soon.

ANEMOS (built 1975 as FERRY MUROTO)

After a short life in Japan this FERRY MUROTO arrived in Greece in 1988. She is still at Perama as the ALEXANDRA L, after a career with Nomicos Lines, Minoan Flying Dolphines, ANEK Lines, NEL Lines and Kefalonian Lines. She was about to travel this summer, but her conversion still goes on. She was purchased by Seajets.

In August 1997 –high season– I travelled on several of the Moby Line ferries, from mainland Italy to Sardinia, Corsica and Elba.

Several of the ships have left us years ago.

SARDEGNA BELLA (built 1967 as STENA BRITANNICA)

This elegant passenger ferry will certainly look familiar to many of our industry professionals. Built as STENA BRITANNICA, she has been sailing on the Kattegat, in Alaska, the Baltic Sea, the English Channel, and last but not least in the Mediterranean Sea.

She sailed for companies as Sally AB and Sally Line, Viking Line, Brittany Ferries, North Sea Ferries, SOL Lines, Moby Lines etc..

She was broken up in 2001.

MOBY BLU (built 1965 as FREE ENTERPRISE II)

Another veteran is Townsend’s FREE ENTERPRISE II, built in The Netherlands.

After a long life on different Channel routes, the small ferry (by today’s standards) was sold in 1982 to Navarma and subsequently left for the Med.

In 2003 she was scrapped in India.

This week we go back 20 years: 2001

Place: Travemünde, at a moment when TT Line started to operate the new NILS HOLGERSSON and PETER PAN, still in service.

TRANSFINLANDIA (built 1981)

The first ship is TRANSFINLANDIA. She was eventually scrapped in 2012.

TRANSEUROPA (built 1995)

Another Finncarriers fleetmate was the sturdy TRANSEUROPA. In 2013 she let the Baltic Sea for a second life in the Meditterranean, as EUROFERRY OLYMPIA. She is still in service between Salerno and Catania.

LÜBECK LINK (built as FINNROSE in 1980)

Last but not least is the ship that would probably never win a beauty contest. LÜBECK LINK is photographed when she was operating for Nordö Link on the Travemünde-Malmö route. In 2017 she was broken up in India.

STENA INVICTA (1991)

STENA INVICTA was operating for Sealink Stena Line on the English Channel, between Dover and Calais.

Built in 1985 as PEDER PAARS for the Danish Railways DSB, she is still in service as COLOR VIKING between Sandefjord and Strömstad (although temporarily laid up).

LAURO EXPRESS (1999)

LAURO EXPRESS is lit by the warm colours of a setting sun. Her funnel has an unmistakeably British flair. Indeed, she was built on the Tyne as ANTRIM PRINCESS in 1967.

She was scrapped in 2007.

SCANIA (1998)

This photo shows SCANIA arriving in the small Swedish port of Limhamn, in the Öresund. Indeed, she was serving the route from Dragör, near Copenhagen. On the right you can see a part of the Öresundsbridge still under construction.

After a spell in Estonia followed by the Mediterranean she ended up in Fiji, where she is still in service as SPIRIT OF ALTRUISM.
