GNV ‘Obliged’ To Install Scrubbers On The New Ro-Pax Ships Ordered In China

Grandi Navi Veloci will be obliged to install scrubbers, rather than using LNG as a fuel on the new ferries ordered earlier this year at Guangzhou Shipyard International shipyard. Reason: the port of Genoa will not be able to provide gas for ships in the next few years.

This is what Antonio Campagnuolo, Marine operations director of the ferry company controlled by MSC Group, said at a conference held in Genoa, and organized by the local Propeller Club. “Genoa is proceeding too slowly on that project,” he said while talking about the plan to open a LNG station for bunkering ships.

“For our new ferries set to be built in China, our idea was originally to opt for gas but, at least for the first units (further two ships are in option), this will not be possible, mainly because on the routes we cover there is still a lack of LNG facilities.”

Campagnuolo concluded saying that “scrubbers will then be installed on the first new ferries in order to be compliant with the new rules on low sulphur emission coming into force from 2020”.

The four ro-pax vessels (plus further four units in options) jointly ordered in China by GNV and Onorato Armatori will have capacity for 2,500 passengers and crew and offer 3,765 lane metres. The first and third ships will be delivered to Grandi Navi Veloci, while Onorato will take delivery of the other two. The first vessel will come into service late in 2020.

A Dream Scenario For OSK-Shiptech

By | 2018 Newsletter week 08 | No Comments

Last week, MSC Group and Onorato Armatori have signed a historical contract with Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) for the order of four luxurious ro-pax ferries. OSK-ShipTech is behind the concept design for the largest ferry order ever.
“Our two largest clients are now doing business together, so to us, this is a dream-scenario, where we are appointed designers on the basis of earlier projects and long-term successful cooperation with all parties. This is such a significant project, and this order is a fantastic opportunity to bring our competencies, the yard’s strength and the owners’ joint pool of many years’ of experience into play,” says CCO of OSK Group, Anders Ørgård.
The contract includes an option for four additional ferries of the same type. In any case, this a record ferry order – and a quantum leap for the joint cooperation between GSI and OSK.

Four new ro-pax ferries for GNV?

By | 2017 Newsletter week 36 | No Comments

Geneva-based shipping company MSC has signed a letter of intent with Guangzhou Shipyard International for four new ro-pax ships, plus four options, says a Fairplay report.
Although an official confirmation has not been given yet, it is believed that the ro-pax ferries will start to be delivered in 2019 to MSC’s subsidiary GNV. The 3,000 lane metre, 2,500-passenger overnight ferries would be LNG-ready.
MSC, who also own Italian ferry company SNAV, acquired the last remaining shares of GNV in January 2016, making it a 100% MSC subsidiary.
GNV operates 10 ro-pax ferries, on 15 routes in the Western Mediterranean.
