Interislander confirms purchase of roro VALENTINE

By | 2022 Newsletter week 37 | No Comments

Interislander has confirmed it will buy the former CLdN roro VALENTINE to provide resilience and secure freight capacity heading into the busy summer and Christmas period.

Interislander leased the roro in November 2021 to provide freight capacity across Te Moana-o-Raukawa Cook Strait while repairs were undertaken on the KAIARAHI gearbox.

KiwiRail has exercised the purchase option, buying the ship from Gotland Shipping (see our news from 2 December 2021).

CLdN and DFDS to cease the slot charter agreement

By | 2022 Newsletter week 21 | No Comments

CLdN and DFDS have agreed to cease the slot charter agreement to allow both parties “to focus on their customers’ needs.”

Going forward, CLdN will operate the full capacity of the additional sailings introduced in January this year on the direct route Rozenburg vv Killinghome.

Terminating the call at Vlaardingen will allow for a later departure from Rozenburg, answering customers’ requests for just in time deliveries for example refrigerated cargoes, in addition to faster turnaround of equipment.

One team, one brand, one CLdN

By | 2022 Newsletter week 17 | No Comments

Since 25 April, all CLdN companies (CLdN RoRo/CLdN Cargo/C.Ro Ports) will use the common brand name “CLdN”.

A common brand name is a logical next step for CLdN. By having further integrated the roro, ports and door-to-door activities over the past couple of years, closer cooperation and communication between different business departments was stimulated which boosts CLdN’s business development and continuous strive towards operational excellence.

Being able to offer fully integrated door-to-door and quay-to-quay transport using their own trailers, containers, port infrastructure and vessels is a unique strength, which ensures that robust and reliable transport solutions can be guaranteed to CLdN’s customers.

BREAKING NEWS

CLdN ro-ro signed a contract with Hyundai Mipo Dockyards for two hybrid 8,000 lane meter ro-ro vessels.

After the delivery of the new 5,000 lane meter LNG vessel FAUSTINE at the end of last year and the expected delivery of her sister SERAPHINE later this month, CLdN has now placed an order or for two new super-efficient 8,000 lane meter vessels with a technologically advanced propulsion train.

The order represents the largest investment in CLdN’s history and is a result of two years of intense engineering and development together with Hyundai Mipo Dockyard.

The new vessels, cargo wise, are modelled on the two 8,000 lane meter ships CELINE and DELPHINE, which CLdN operates since 2017.

Hybrid design

The new ships will be equipped with two LNG dual fuel main engines (ME-GI type) of 11MW each, as well as two electric propulsion motors of 6MW each.

In full electric mode the ship can achieve a cruising speed of 16-17 knots.

Both vessels will also be future proofed, to allow expansion or integration of technological advancements as time moves on. Compared with CLdN’s largest vessels currently in operation, the new ships will further reduce GHG emissions by 40% and will be NOx TIER III compliant.

Reducing carbon footprint

In 2021, CLdN announced they are the top performer amongst their ro-ro shipping peers in Northwest Europe for CO2 emissions per tonne of freight carried. These new vessels will strengthen CLdN’s current position as greenest ro-ro operator and push its ambition to further reduce its carbon footprint.

By investing in technologically advanced ships and terminals, CLdN enables its customers to improve their carbon footprint and support them at the same time in making their supply chains more efficient and robust.

Space charter agreement CLdN – DFDS on Rotterdam – River Humber

By | 2021 Newsletter week 47 | No Comments

On 1 January 2022, UK customs procedures become more stringent. (*)

As a result, freight customers demand for earlier arrivals into the UK, and improved frequency. Therefore, DFDS and CLdN have entered into a Space Charter Agreement.

DFDS and CLdN will each provide one additional vessel, on a rotation Rozenburg – Vlaardingen – Killingholme from Sunday through Friday.

“At the moment we do indeed arrive at Killingholme at 07:00, but the early arrival (at 05:00) of this additional sailing makes all the difference for customers as it allows them to do an extra trip in the UK, which is very interesting given the traction problem there,” says a CLdN spokesman. “In addition, the earlier arrival is important for certain product groups.”

In Rotterdam, customers will have the possibility to load and discharge cargo in either Rozenburg and/or Vlaardingen.

DFDS and CLdN will continue operating all sailings independently including all related commercial activities.

This additional service will start on 11 January 2022.

Extra advantage: by going to C-Ro’s terminal in Killingholme, any congestion at DFDS’ terminal in Immingham will be relieved.

Remarks

  • In 2020, DFDS and CLdN signed space charter agreements on Zeebrugge – Gotenburg.
  • In 2021, DFDS and P&O Ferries entered a space charter agreement on Calais – Dover.
  • Stena Line will move its Europoort RoRo service from Killingholme to the nearby Port of Immingham commencing 1st January 2022, where Stena Line will be able to offer increased terminal capacity and be a service provider of both terminal and shipping operations to the company’s freight customers. Stena Line’s other North Sea route on the Humber, the Hoek van Holland-Killingholme RoPax service, will remain and continue in Killingholme.

KiwiRail: replacement ferry to boost Interislander service

By | 2021 Newsletter week 45 | No Comments

KiwiRail has chartered the CLdN Kawasaki-type roro VALENTINE for an initial 12 months.

It is due to arrive in mid-December.

Ropax KAIARAHI (ex STENA ALEGRA) requires major repairs to its gearbox after its sudden failure, and those repairs are expected to take at least until March.

The remaining two Interislander ferries, ARATERE and KAITAKI cannot serve the market alone. The freight-only ferry will free up space for passengers and their vehicles on the other ferries, ensuring New Zealanders can travel during the summer holiday season.
