CONDOR LIBERATION Tests Portsmouth
Andrew Williamson, Passenger Operations Manager at Portsmouth International Port sent us this picture of an unusual visitor: CONDOR LIBERATION.
This was part of contingency planning to familiarise the port with handling the high-speed ferries, if Condor Ferries were unable to berth in Poole for any reason.
With effect from week 37, CLdN will operate one sailing per week from Leixões to Dublin, followed by calling Liverpool.

At a rapid pace CLdN expands its roro network and frequencies. The compagnie is also much more active in its communication, a change with the past.
CLdN announced it will now have two weekly departures from Zeebrugge to Esbjerg: one on Saturday (arrival on Sunday) and one on Wednesday (arrival on Thursday).
Only one week after the launch of their new triangle service between Santander, Liverpool and Dublin, CLdN Ro-Ro has added Zeebrugge as a port of call to their bi-weekly Leixōes-Rotterdam service.
This move strengthens CLdN’s network to and from the Iberian Peninsula even further.
CLdN has organised for two of their weekly services from Leixōes to Rotterdam, to have an extra call in Zeebrugge. From the port of Zeebrugge they will, as from now, offer their clients additional through – shipment services to Esbjerg and Göteborg. “As a result, we now have a reliable, cost-efficient and environmentally friendly shortsea connection from the very south to the most northern parts of Europe,” says a CLdN spokesman.
To maximise capacity and minimise their carbon footprint as much as possible, the shipping company has chosen to deploy the latest generation of H5 class vessels (carrying up to 450 freight units + 200 new cars per shipment) to the route.

Port of Cork Welcomes New CLdN Service
As from April 24, CLdN will operate three sailings per week, up from two presently, on the Zeebrugge – Dublin service and in addition, will create a new roro service operating one round trip a week between Zeebrugge and Cork.
CEO of Port of Cork, Brendan Keating, said: “This announcement by CLdN will greatly support our efforts in the Port of Cork to keep supply chains moving during the current pandemic. The Port has been actively looking at ways to bolster its freight activity and is delighted to partner with a company that enjoys such a great reputation in the shipping industry.
CLdN introduced VALENTINE and CELANDINE on the Zeebrugge – Santander service, adding almost 40% to the total capacity between these two ports.
This scale-up fits well into the growing demand CLdN has been experiencing on the connection between Belgium and Spain.
In 2016 CLdN started the route with only one roundtrip each week. Today it sails between the two ports no less than three times a week., with departures on both sides on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

New DFDS Mega Freight Ferries n° 3 and 4 to be Deployed on Belgium – Sweden
The DFDS freight website now shows that the 3rd Chinese mega roro, Hollandia Seaways, will start to operate on Ghent – Gothenburg next week. She arrived in Sweden after the long delivery trip, which included berthing trials in Vlaardingen and Immingham.
DFDS expects in Q2, 2020 to replace the three freight ferries currently deployed on Gothenburg – Zeebrugge with the 4th 6,700 lane metre mega freight ferry. The ferries that are replaced are expected to be deployed elsewhere in DFDS’ European route network.
The first two units, Ephesus Seaways and Troy Seaways (photo), are in service in the Mediterranean Sea.
DFDS & CLdN: Space Charter Agreements on Gothenburg – Zeebrugge
In June 2019, DFDS added the freight ferry route between Gothenburg and Zeebrugge to its portfolio.
DFDS currently deploys three freight ferries, offering five weekly departures in each direction: Magnolia Seaways, Belgia Seaways and Gothia Seaways.
In order to optimise capacity utilisation, DFDS has entered into two mutual space charter agreements with CLdN that also operates a freight ferry route between Gothenburg and Zeebrugge.
The space charter agreements entail that capacity is shared between route operators while all commercial activities remain entirely under the control of each operator.
“We are very pleased to announce our new space charter agreements. The flexibility of the agreements entails that we reduce the environmental footprint while offering a total of ten weekly departures in each direction on our two routes between Sweden and Belgium to support trade and the growth of our customers”, says Peder Gellert Pedersen, Executive Vice President, DFDS Group, and Head of Ferry Division.
The space charter agreements are expected to start on 1 January 2020. When the agreements are fully implemented, DFDS and CLdN are each expected to deploy one freight ferry on their respective routes between Gothenburg and Zeebrugge.
