Baleària orders innovative ferry for Ibiza – Formentera route

Baleària presented at the FITUR fair the first diesel-battery-electric ropax ferry, with zero emissions in port and during manoeuvring.

The vessel will also be a test lab for the use of green hydrogen (100kW). The shipping company participates in the European Green Hysland project, whose objective is to turn Mallorca into the first green hydrogen hub in southwestern Europe.

From the point of view of passengers, the design prioritizes exterior accommodations, focused mainly on the summer market, with terraces at different levels where you can enjoy views of the sea during the journey and with services focused on the pleasure of travelling: chill-out areas, a large bar with space for a DJ and a shower area to cool off.

Two Companies For The Melilla Public Service Contracts

The authorities of the Spanish enclave of Melilla have awarded two public service ferry contracts (Obligación de Servicio Público). These contracts start on April 1 and last for one year.

Trasmediterranea will operate the ropax ferry service between Melilla and Malaga.

(6 round trips per week / budget of €3.9million)

Balearia has received the contract for the lines to Almeria and Motril.

(each 3 round trips per week / budget €7.5million)

This will be the first time that two different companies will operate the public service contract between the Spanish city in North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula.

Until now Trasmediterránea had always won the contests with Malaga and Almería. It will also be the first time that the route with Motril is included as a public service obligation.

Balearia will use the 2019-built HYPATIA DE ALEJANDRIA.

Trasmediterranea continues to operate the route with CIUDAD AUTÓNOMA MELILLA.

The head of Porto Livorno 2000, Matteo Savelli (who is also CEO of Toremar) announced to the newspaper ‘Il Tirreno’, that they will appeal against the decision from the regional administrative court in Tuscany which stated that the Grimaldi-participated Sintermar Darsena Toscana terminal can handle also passengers, in addition to ro-ro cargo. Thus rejecting the appeal promoted by Porto Livorno 2000, the passenger terminal controlled by Moby and participated by MSC.

Porto Livorno 2000 is convinced to be the only terminal operator in the port with the authorization to handle passengers from cruise vessels and ferries following a public tender won few years ago. That’s the reason why it opposed the concession released in the recent past by the local port authority for a second ro-pax terminal to Sintermar Darsena Toscana (Grimaldi).

The Florence-based administrative regional court stated that Porto Livorno 2000 cannot be the only passenger terminal of the port recalling also the competition rules introduced both by in the national and in the EU legal framework.

The Port Authority of Valencia Selects Baleària’s Offer to Build the New Passenger Terminal

The Board of Directors of the Port Authority of Valencia has selected the offer presented by Baleària for the construction and management of the new public passenger terminal in the Port of València.

This infrastructure will be located between the Poniente Quay and the Espigón del Turia Quay, in the area previously occupied by the Unión Naval de Valencia shipyard.

The terminal will occupy approximately 100,000 m2 and its concession will be granted for a period of 35 years, extendable to a maximum of 50 years.
