Tallink Grupp’s September Statistics Show Improvement on Last Year – Q3 Overall Tougher than 2020

Positive trend for September

Negative trend for Q3

Pax: -13% • 1,144,092

Pax Cars: -16.8% • 229,468

Numbers are still far off from what Tallink is used to in Q3 in the pre-COVID times.

The company does not foresee great increases in passenger numbers before next spring or summer. Difficult low autumn-winter season ahead.

In light of the need to optimise the company’s activities for the low season ahead and with bookings for the autumn-winter season increasing at a slower pace than expected, the company made the decision to temporarily suspend the operation of its vessels BALTIC QUEEN, SILJA EUROPA and SILJA SERENADE after the end of the Christmas school holidays in January.

SILJA EUROPA will operate some special cruises and charter cruises during the suspension period.

The company will start operating its shuttle vessels Star and Megastar according to the traditional winter schedule from 16 October 2021.

Moby Charters Out ELIANA MARINO and MARIA GRAZIA ONORATO to DFDS and Cobelfret

DFDS and CLdN are adding more roro tonnage. The ships come from the Moby fleet.

Our colleague from Shipping Italy revealed that both ELIANA MARINO and MARIA GRAZIA ONORATO ship have been sub-chartered from Moby for at least six months.

ELIANA MARINO (2,500 lane metre) will be operated on the Mersin (Turkey) – Trieste (Italy) line by DFDS

Daily charter rate should be around EUR 14,000.

MARIA GRAZIA ONORATO (4,076 lane metre) is expected to be deployed by CLdN in Northern Europe and the ‘charter price’ should exceed EUR 20,000 per day. Both charters start from October.

Both roro’s have been operating up to date by Moby (in bare boat charter) on the Motorways of the Seas, linking Italy mainland with Sicily and Sardinia islands.

CMAL Acquires Secondhand Tonnage

A deal to purchase a ferry for deployment on the Clyde and Hebrides network has been agreed, bringing additional resilience to the fleet, says a release from Transport Scotland.

Norled’s UTNE has been earmarked for the Oban-Craignure route, and communities in Skye and the Western Isles will also benefit as a result of the cascade of vessels elsewhere on the network.

UTNE was designed by LMG Marin (LMG 40-DE type) and delivered in 2015.

GROTTE was design by OSK Group and built at Hvide Sande Shipyard.

It was built according to exactly the same design as the two current ferries, FENJA and MENJA, which for many years have shown their efficiency in the short Danish domestic route between Esbjerg and Nordby on the island of Fanø.

The ferries FENJA and MENJA have just switched to fossil-free biofuel. The three ferries together will reduce emissions by up to 96 percent.

SUPERFERRY II will be Delivered to Seajets on October 12

End of an era for the Belgian-built SUPERFERRY II of Golden Star ferries, which will be delivered to SEAJETS on October 12, following the agreement that was made between the two ferry operators last April.

The 46-years-old ship will leave the port of Rafina after 28 years of service on the Andros-Tinos-Mykonos line.

The former PRINCE LAURENT of RMT served the route initially on behalf of Strintzis Lines and then for Blue Star Ferries and Golden Star Ferries. She will be remembered as the “Legend” of that line.

Case Studies for Anek-Attica Group and Grimaldi Group

According to an article published in the Greek Mononews there will be further developments for the future of ANEK LINES and the Hellenic Coastal Lines in general. The basic points underlined are:

  • Piraeus Bank, wants to speed up the procedures and seeks to fully regulate its relations with the ferry companies
  • The basic scenario includes three phases and will proceed if only a solution found with ANEK LINES’ loan obligations
  • ANEK LINES loan obligations amount to 255 million euros, while the total borrowing of Attica Group amounts to 452.77 million euros
  • Attica Group is raising the issue of writing off 50% of ANEK’s short-term loans in order to proceed to the unification with ANEK LINES, as currently cannot incorporate both companies’ obligations and be viable at the same time
  • If the issue of the cancellation of ANEK’s obligations is overcome then there should be a guarantee of the rights of the traditional shareholders of ANEK in the new scheme
  • Then the scenario predicts that after the unification, the enlarged Attica Group will be sold to foreign Funds
  • Next, the scenario envisages the split of the Attica Group and the purchase by the Emmanuele Grimaldi group of ships operating on the Adriatic line plus some ships on the line of Crete and the Aegean.
