Stena Line’s Second E-Flexer Floated Out In China

The second vessel under construction at the Avic Weihai Shipyard has been floated out.

She will be named STENA EDDA, after an old Norse term that refers to a central medieval collection of poems and divine mythology.

STENA EDDA is scheduled to enter service on the Belfast-Liverpool route in spring 2020.

This is the second of three new E-Flexer vessels bound for the Irish Sea during 2020 and 2021.

In addition to the three Irish Sea vessels, Stena Line has also ordered a further two E-Flexer ro-pax vessels with a larger design (3,600 lane metre), to be deployed within Stena Line’s network in 2022.

A Slice Of Hollywood For Holyhead

Holyhead could soon have its own version of one of the world’s most iconic landmarks if ambitious plans by Stena Line get the go ahead.

Stena Line, who own and operate Holyhead Port, want to erect a 30m ‘HOLYHEAD’ sign near the lighthouse at South Stack similar to the world-famous HOLLYWOOD sign which has provided the Californian city with an instantly recognisable global identity for the last 95 years.

Stena Line Inaugurates Onshore Power Supply In Oslo

Stena Line is the first ferry company to connect to the onshore power supply connection in the Port of Oslo. STENA SAGA will now be connecting to the electricity grid during calls into port.

Stena has been working with onshore power supply connections since 1989 and is a pioneer within this area. With STENA SAGA, 14 of Stena Lines’ 38 vessels can now connect to green electricity when in port.

The ‘cold ironing’ is expected to result in a saving of just over 1,400 tonnes of fuel per year.

All Three New Irish Sea Stena Line Vessels On Schedule

Stena Line has reached an important milestone in its major new fleet investment programme, with the steel cutting of a third E-Flexer ro-pax ship to be deployed on its Irish Sea routes.

This means that all three new E-Flexer ships, planned to enter into service on the Irish Sea during 2020 and 2021, are now under construction at the Avic Weihai Shipyard in China.

The first of the new vessels will commence operation on the Holyhead to Dublin route in early 2020, with the remaining two ships to be introduced on the Liverpool to Belfast route in 2020 and 2021.

Smooth Sailing For Stena Line’s Battery Hybrid Vessel

The STENA JUTLANDICA has now completed its first month of operation as a battery hybrid vessel. Experiences from these first weeks have exceeded expectations.

The project to convert her to a battery hybrid vessel is being carried out in 3 steps.

1) Switching to electrical operation to reduce the use of diesel generators, for maneuvering and powering the bow thrusters when the ship is in port.

2) Battery power will be connected to two of the four primary machines, which means that she will be able to run on electrical power for about 10 nautical miles inside the Gothenburg archipelago out to Vinga Lighthouse.

3) All four primary machines will be connected to the batteries and the ship will be able to cover the 50 nautical miles between Sweden and Denmark solely on electrical power.

The technical solutions in the first step have been developed by Stena Teknik in collaboration with the Callenberg Technology Group, with half of the funding for the project coming from the Swedish Transport Administration and the EU.

Halmstad Is Getting Ready For Stena Line

Stena Line will move the Grenå line from Varberg to Halmstad. This was confirmed in June.

Now an agreement has been signed between the municipality of Halmstad and Hallands Hammnar (Hallands Ports). The port will invest SEK 126 million into a new ferry terminal: extended marshalling area and dock, and an additional ro-ro ramp,

The first ferries will sail from Halmstad in 2020.

Stena Line Introduces First AI-Assisted Vessel

Stena Line is running a pilot study where artificial intelligence technology is implemented on board vessels.

  • Central idea: to reduce fuel consumption by 2.5% annually.
  • How: In close collaboration with Hitachi, an AI-model is being developed that will help predict the most fuel-efficient way to operate a certain vessel on a specific route.
  • Vessel: STENA SCANDINAVICA.
  • Goal: all Stena Line vessels assisted by AI in 2021.
