Q3 Interim report: cargo keeps DFDS on track for record results

  • Freight is pushing the DFDS figures to record levels, while the passenger volumes stay the same.
  • Strong performance for freight on North Sea routes: volumes up 8%
  • Revenue DKK 3,922 (3,799) +3.3%
  • EBITDA DKK 976 million (972 million) +0.4%
  • EBIT DKK 742 million (738 million) +0.5%
  • Profit before tax DKK 714 Million (732 million) -2.6%)
  • The Group’s revenue growth for 2017 is now expected to be around 3% compared to previously around 4%, excluding revenue from bunker surcharges.
  • At the Q&A session, DFDS CEO Niels Smedegaard said there were no plans for new cruise ferries. Current vessels can continue for 10 years if needed.

HH Ferries Group: cargo traffic continued to grow in Q3

Scandlines Helsingborg-Helsingör saw continued growth in cargo traffic, which made the management to decide to increase capacity by expanding ferry HAMLET’s sailing schedule by five hours daily as from December. The expansion will make it possible to transport an additional 40,000 trucks per year.

Q3

  • Number of departures 12,800 = status quo
  • Trucks: 102,600 (98,000) = +5%
  • Cars: 457,000 (473,000) = -3%
  • Passengers: 2.54 million (2.5 million) = -3%

In October, HH Ferries received the final authority approvals for TYCHO BRAHE’s charging stations. This ferry is already sailing in both battery and hybrid operations, while charging procedures are being adjusted.
The electrification of AURORA will follow before the turn of the year.

Tallink Grupp’s Q3 interim report

Q3 in figure

  • 2.9 million passengers (+2%)
    Revenue EUR 282.7 million (EUR 273.6 million) +3.3%
    EBITDA EUR 75.4 million (EUR 67.1 million) +12.3%
  • Net profit EUR 47.8 million (EUR 42.8 million) + increased by 11.7%.

In Q3, the Group’s revenue and operating result were impacted by following operational factors

  • After the rerouting of ships in December 2016, carriage capacity increased on a number of operated routes.
  • During June and August, one cruise ferry operated the Tallinn – Helsinki route in contrast to two cruise ferries in last year.
  • Increased competition on Tallinn – Helsinki route.

Highest Q3 number of freight volumes on P&O Larne – Cairnryan route in six years

P&O Ferries saw the highest number of lorries and trailers between Larne and Cairnryan in the third quarter of the year (compared with any Q3 since 2011).
P&O carried 53,305 lorries and trailers on its ships in the months of July, August and September. (=+3.3%)
Neal Mernock, P&O Ferries Sector Director on the Irish Sea, said: “Our port at Larne is fast becoming the gateway of choice for anyone exporting to or from Ireland. It has outstanding connections via rail and road, especially after the upgrading of the A8 dual carriageway, and is nine miles closer to Scotland than the port at Belfast.”
P&O Ferries operates seven sailings a day between Larne and Cairnryan using two ro-pax sister vessels, EUROPEAN CAUSEWAY and EUROPEAN HIGHLANDER.
