CAT Hits Record Numbers

- CAT’s August ridership numbers largest in service history.
- But: the numbers are far below what has been predicted by Nova Scotia’s Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (TIR) department.

Several ferries that are anchored in the Venezuelan municipalities of Anzoátegui and Nueva Esparta will be transferred to the Dianca shipyard (Diques y Astilleros Nacionales Compañía Anónima).
The ferries are: MARÍA ROSARIO (former PURBECK), CONCEPCIÓN MARIÑO, HSC LILIA CONCEPCIÓN, ROSA EUGENIA (former COUTANCES), HSC TALLINK AUTOEXPRESS 2 (refloated 40 days after having sunk) and MARÍA LIBRE.
CARMEN ERNESTINA is in the shipyard of the Araya Peninsula, after sinking in 2016 in Puerto La Cruz.
The only operational ferry is the HSC VIRGEN DEL VALLE II, which operates on two of the four engines.
What this transfer means is unknown
Scotslion Ferries Ltd, a consortium of business people, are looking into the feasibility of purchasing the ferry SATURN, in a bid to free up car space on the current two CalMac ferries. Reason: they are dissatisfied, after ISLE OF ARRAN was out of service, and CALEDONIAN ISLE had to operate with a single ramp before going to drydock.
Minoan Lines recently held a ceremony at the port of Souda, Crete, for the inauguration of the Piraeus-Chania route that is served by the cruise ferry MYKONOS PALACE.
The ferry departs daily at 4pm from Piraeus, and at midnight from Souda. The journey lasts six hours and 30 minutes.

News website Jydske Vestkyste quoted a lawyer, saying that the EU verdict about the appeal of HH Ferries could threaten the construction of the Fehmarn tunnel between Germany and Denmark.
In simple words, what is it about?
- HH Ferries have submitted complaints to the EU Commission claiming that the Danish/Swedish guarantee on the Consortium loans are illegal according to the State Aid rules.
- In October 2015 the Commission decided against HH Ferries.
- The decision by the Commission was brought by the EU General Court with the Danish and Swedish states as interveners.
- The General Court has now reached a decision. Via below link the 60-page document can be downloaded.
In a reaction to the article, the communication manager of the Fehmarn tunnel replied, saying that the Court’s verdict says nothing about the state guarantee model being illegal. The decision merely states that the Commission has not followed all the procedures.

Problem: The seasonal service Bella Coola-Port Hardy could not be operated after the planned ferry, NORTHERN SEA WOLF, formerly the Greek ferry AQUA SPIRIT, was still being upgraded in Vctoria.
Result: loss of tourists
Solution: BC Ferries brought in the NORTHERN ADVENTURE, which is normally used for Inside Passage and Haidi Gwaii service. The ferry started to sail to Bella Coola on 16 September and ends on 11 October.

Attica published its H1 results, which includes Hellenic Seaways for the first time since its acquisition.

+ EBITDA = 8.81m (7.07m)
The Group’s traffic volumes, considering full consolidation of HSW only for June (1.6.2018 – 30.6.2018), increased to 2.05m pax (+32.5%), 278.71k cars (+27.0%) and 167.88k freight units (+14.5%).
Kongsberg Wins Contracts For Nine Hybrid Ro-Ro Vessels
Kongsberg Maritime has been awarded contracts with Nanjing Jinling Shipyard Co., to deliver power and hybrid systems to the nine ro-ro vessels ordered by Grimaldi Group.
The contract scope includes supply and integration of large battery systems, shaft generators, frequency converters and energy management systems.
Zeebrugge celebrated the christening of CLdN’s ro-ro DELPHINE on 20 September 2018. The ceremony was held in the evening, to have the best conditions for the fireworks.
