GNV To Add Tonnage: GNV SEALAND

Soon GNV SEALAND will be a new addition to the fleet of Grandi Navi Veloci.

SCOTTISH VIKING, currently operating in the Baltic for Stena Line, is a 2009-Visentini-built ropax with a capacity of 2,255 lane metres and 195 cars.

First the ship will help to replace the vessels that are getting their scrubbers.

In the following months, GNV SEALAND will strengthen the offer and support the further expansion of the connections.

This already started in Q4, 2020, with the charter of FORZA and TENACIA, supporting the lines to and from Sicily.

GNV will also introduce its 2,564 lane metre newbuilding in the spring. (built at Visentini)

GNV also announced that starting from June 2021 the new seasonal line with Sardinia will be operational between Civitavecchia and Olbia – with 5 departures a week from both ports – in addition to the historic summer lines Genoa-Porto Torres and Genoa-Olbia.

Port of Zeebrugge: Growth of 3% in 2020

Zeebrugge stayed 100% operational during the pandemic. Roro traffic suffered because of the reduced handling of new cars. This drop was compensated by a strong growth in container traffic, LNG and solid bulk.

The port took a lot of initiatives to be Brexit-proof and invested twice as much into new infrastructure.

Modal shift: the port sees an important growth of rail connections, and estuary waterway connections went up 4.2%

  • Added a call in Zeebrugge on the route Leixões – Rotterdam, allowing cargo to be transferred to Esbjerg and Göteborg.
  • Zeebrugge – Dublin: from 2 to 3 sailings with so-called “Brexit busters”

Lübeck Continues to Prepare the Scandinavienkai

The handling volumes of Lübecker Hafen-Gesellschaft (LHG) were just over two percent below the previous year’s figure at just under 21,840 million tons.

The volume increase in the past four months in particular contributed to minimise the decline.

Automotive business was 20% higher.

Most areas, including the high-volume roro handling, were in decline.

Forest products fell by 7.5 percent for structural reasons.

LHG is preparing Skandinavienkai in Travemünde with an additional area of ​​around 60,000m2 and a 10,000m2 multi-purpose hall for the forest industry. First customer will be Stora Enso.

The terminal will be ready at the end of the year, when Wallenius SOL starts to call with the new roro ships.

Irish Hauliers are Bypassing Welsh Ports to Avoid Brexit Bureaucracy

“On our European routes there’s a 500% increase in freight volume going through the port compared to last year,” says Glenn Carr, GM Rosslare Europort.

He believes this change in operations will not be temporary.

He said decisions by ferry companies and businesses who trade with the EU to re-direct freight, have been made based on market analysis.

Enova Gives NOK 38 Million to Hydrogen Projects

Enova provides NOK 38 million for a hydrogen ferry and hydrogen production in Rogaland, Norway. This is Enova’s third award for hydrogen projects on ships in one month.

Norled’s ferry HIDLE is under construction. Next year it will sail on the Finnøy connection.

It will initially run on biodiesel, but Norled is considering rebuilding it to run on hydrogen.

Enova announced that they will support the ferry project with NOK 14.6 million, and the production and bunkering facility with NOK 24.2 million.

FESTOS PALACE in Malta for Repairs and Drydocking

Minoan Lines’ FESTOS PALACE is at the Palumbo Shipyards (Malta) since 15 January, undergoing scheduled repairs and dry docking (dock no 4). The ship is expected to be back on Piraeus-Heraklion as from 15 February.

Stena Line’s Newest Ship Debuts on Rosslare-Cherbourg instead of Belfast-Liverpool

Stena Line’s brand-new STENA EMBLA will make its Irish Sea debut on the Rosslare-Cherbourg service.  Originally scheduled for service on the Belfast-Liverpool route, due to the current Brexit related shift for direct routes and increasing customer demand, Stena Line has decided to temporarily deploy her on Rosslare-Cherbourg.

The first sailing will be from Rosslare on 14 January 2021.

STENA EMBLA will make three weekly return trips between Rosslare and Cherbourg, which alongside the STENA FORETELLER will see Stena Line operate 12 crossing per week between Ireland and the Continent.

Ferry Shipping News understands that route vessel STENA HORIZON needs maintenance. If she will return on the route is so far unclear.
