A new public service delegation for the Newhaven-Dieppe ferry line

The Newhaven-Dieppe ferry line, operated under the Transmanche Ferries brand, is currently run by DFDS Seaways under a public service delegation contract with the SMPAT.

This five-year contract will terminate on 31 December 2022.

To ensure continuity of service, the SMPAT has decided to launch a call for tenders (in French) to allow the new public service delegation to start as of 1 January 2023.

ISABELLE returns to Riga after two years of absence

Tallink Grupp’s vessel ISABELLE is undergoing regular maintenance in the Turku Repair Yard, prior to returning to Port of Riga after two years of absence

ISABELLE, which until the start of the pandemic operated on the company’s Riga-Stockholm route, is getting a regular dry-docking, scheduled from 12 to 25 February 2022.

After the technical maintenance works, the vessel will proceed directly to the Port of Riga where she will wait for the re-opening of company’s popular Riga-Stockholm route in April 2022.

Planning approval for development of Marchwood port

Solent Gateway has announced planning consent has been granted for the development of Marchwood Port in Southampton. Port of Marchwoord is known for the MoD roro ships.

The development of the port approved by New Forest District Council, will modernise its operations and facilities, create new jobs and bring investment to the area, whilst providing improved capability and support to the Ministry of Defence.

The improvements will allow a wide range of cargoes and commodities to be transported through the port using its roro and lolo facilities and stored onsite.

The port is also a tax site and customs site as part of the successful Solent Freeport bid and offers outstanding sea, rail and road connectivity.

Solent Gateway Ltd was formed in 2016 and is a joint venture between David Macbrayne Limited and GBA (Holdings) Ltd to develop and manage the Port of Marchwood, Southampton Water for 35 years.

ASTERION II chartered by Attica Group for Superfast Ferries

Anek Lines’ ASTERION II is being chartered by Attica Group and will be operated by Superfast Ferries on the Patras-Igoumenitsa-Venice line.

The ropax was purchased by Alphaglobe Shipping Ltd. in 2018 and chartered (long-term time charter with purchase option) to Anek Lines until October 31, 2021.

Then a monthly charter followed until last week, when the charter was transferred to Attica Group.

The ships’ branding has been removed, and a Superfast banner added.

The roro service between the port of Tarragona and Turkey turns one year old

The line, promoted by Ekol Logistics and with the participation of DFDS, Grup Arola and the Euroports terminal, has created the interest of companies in the province.

On February 10, 2021, the ro-ro route between the port of Tarragona and the Turkish port of Izmir was launched , which in its first year of operation has moved a total of 16,150 freight units.

Wärtsilä solutions open route to decarbonisation for Poland’s first LNG-fuelled RoPax vessels

Wärtsilä has been contracted by Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. to supply engines, fuel storage and supply systems for three new RoPax vessels, the first LNG-fuelled RoPax vessels to be built for the Polish maritime sector.

The ships will be operated by ferry companies Unity Line and Polferries.

The vessels will each operate with four highly efficient Wärtsilä 31DF dual-fuel engines. The LNG-fuelled engines can use bio-LNG, either on its own or blended with conventional LNG, to further reduce their carbon footprint. The operators intend to run the vessels entirely on bio-LNG by 2025.

Scandlines is looking for a new CFO

Scandlines CFO Per Johannesen Madsen has decided to leave the German-Danish ferry operator and will resign from his position by the end of August 2022 at the latest.

Per Johannesen Madsen has been CFO and part of Scandlines’ Executive Management since 2012, responsible for the overall financial management of the group and its financial reporting. He has been in charge of a number of departments and projects – including the sale of Scandlines as a company and of the Helsingborg-Elsinore route. Now Per Johannesen Madsen has decided to continue his journey outside Scandlines.

Per Johannesen Madsen will continue his work for Scandlines until further notice and will also contribute to ensuring a smooth transition once a new CFO has been found. He will resign from his position by the end of August at the latest.

Baleària would like a second ELEANOR ROOSEVELT

Baleària is negotiating with Armón Gijón to have a second fast ferry of the “Eleanor Roosevelt” class. This HSC was delivered by the shipyard in spring 2021.

The company is negotiating this second order from the Gijon shipyard due to the very satisfactory commercial result of the ELEANOR ROOSEVELT and the level of satisfaction expressed by its users.

DFDS January: freight up 14% driven by Mediterranean and UK routes

  • Freight volumes in January 2022 were 13.8% above 2021.
  • The volume growth in January was mainly driven by higher volumes on UK and Mediterranean routes.
  • Volumes on all UK routes increased considerably compared to last year as volumes in the first month post-Brexit were reduced by new rules and procedures as well as stock-building ahead of Brexit.
  • Volumes in the Mediterranean network were up on all routes on the back of deployment of more capacity and continued good growth in Turkish exports.
  • For the last twelve months 2022-21, total transported freight lane metres increased 6.7% to 43.2m from DKK 40.5m in 2021-20.
  • The total number of passengers in January 2022 was 45.7% above 2021.
  • The number of passengers increased between Norway and Denmark, while the number of passengers on UK and Baltic routes were on level with 2021.
  • For the last twelve months 2022-21, total number of passengers was 0.9m compared to 1.3m in 2021-20 and 5.1m in 2020-19, the latter being the latest pre-Covid-19 year.
