Wärtsilä solutions chosen for world’s first methanol fuelled hybrid Ro-Ro vessels

Technology group Wärtsilä will supply an integrated hybrid propulsion system for the two new Ro-Ro vessels under construction at the China Merchants Jinling shipyard (Weihai) Co., Ltd for Stena RoRo.

The ships will be the world’s first methanol fuelled hybrid Ro-Ro vessels and will operate in the Stena Line Irish Sea system.

Each vessel will be equipped with two Wärtsilä 32M multi-fuel engines capable now of operating on methanol fuel and with ammonia ready notation.

Wärtsilä will also supply the MethanolPac fuel storage, supply and control system, the gearboxes, two controllable pitch propellers (CPP), three bow thrusters, the NACOS navigation system, three Wärtsilä 20 auxiliary engines, and the hybrid electric system consisting of shore power, batteries, shaft generators, converters, transformers as well as the Energy Management System making it all work together.

Each vessel will also benefit from the Wärtsilä Hybrid Solution, optimising the fuel consumption today and allowing for future full green operation. The vessels will also be equipped with Wärtsilä shore power solution enabling carbon-free operations when the vessels are in port.

The 147m ships will have 2,800 lane metre capacity.

They are scheduled for delivery in June and November 2025.

Wärtsilä solutions open route to decarbonisation for Poland’s first LNG-fuelled RoPax vessels

Wärtsilä has been contracted by Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. to supply engines, fuel storage and supply systems for three new RoPax vessels, the first LNG-fuelled RoPax vessels to be built for the Polish maritime sector.

The ships will be operated by ferry companies Unity Line and Polferries.

The vessels will each operate with four highly efficient Wärtsilä 31DF dual-fuel engines. The LNG-fuelled engines can use bio-LNG, either on its own or blended with conventional LNG, to further reduce their carbon footprint. The operators intend to run the vessels entirely on bio-LNG by 2025.

Wärtsilä, Rina & Co to deliver a viable hydrogen fuel solution to meet IMO 2050 target

Wärtsilä, together with class society RINA, ABB, Helbio, the Liberian Registry, and an energy major have joined forces in an effort to deliver a solution with hydrogen as fuel. The aim is to have a scalable and sustainable solution that will exceed the IMO 2050 target for a 70% reduction in carbon intensity without the need for an extensive infrastructure investment.

By producing hydrogen onboard and using readily available LNG, the solution becomes viable and in a much faster time than would otherwise be possible.

The concept is based on combining LNG with steam to produce hydrogen and CO2. The hydrogen produced will be used directly in a mix with natural gas in internal combustion engines or in fuel cells, thus eliminating the need for hydrogen to be stored onboard. The CO2 will be liquefied using the cryogenic stream of LNG that would be used as fuel anyway, and later disposed ashore for carbon storage. Tankers can use the stored CO2 as inert gas during discharge.

“The necessary equipment can easily be fitted on the deck of a commercial vessel” the companies added. “This innovative concept will support the marine sector’s gradual transition from LNG to hydrogen, without any major adjustments to a vessel’s onboard technologies”.

Boreal Has Signed A Contract For Two New Electric Ferries

Norwegian company Boreal, owned by Hong Kong-based company China Everbright Limited ordered two ferries in The Netherlands.

The Wärtsilä designed plug-in hybrid ferries will be built by the Holland Shipyards Group, and put into operation on the Abelnes-Andabeløy and Launes-Kvellandstrand routes.

Boreal signed a contract with Agder County Municipality on the operation of the two ferry connections in December last year. The 10+2 year contract starts on September 1, 2021.

Wallenius SOL Connects Wärtsilä In Port Of Vaasa To Continental Europe

As from November 2019, Wallenius SOL will include Port of Vaasa in its regular liner network.

With weekly calls, it will connect Vaasa with the ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge. This is made possible through a long-term co-operation with technology company Wärtsilä, who will have its state-of-the-art production facility on site. The facility, called the Smart Technology Hub, will be located in direct connection with Port of Vaasa from 2021 onwards. All inbound deliveries from Central Europe to Vaasa will be routed via a consolidation point in Antwerp with the weekly sailings offered by Wallenius SOL.

Furthermore, Wallenius SOL will ship the ready-made engines southbound from Wärtsilä to its customers worldwide, also with Antwerp as hub.

Boreal and Wärtsilä Ship Design have agreed to develop a hydrogen-powered ferry for the Hjelmeland-Skipavik-Nesvik stretch. The ferry will be the first in the world where the vessel will use hydrogen as a fuel.
The Norwegian Public Roads Administration has been commissioned to announce a development contract for a hydrogen-powered ferry, which will be put into operation in 2021. The ferry service will be operated by two ferries, one being fully electric and the other hybrid hydrogen-electric with 50 percent of the hydrogen output.
Boreal has reserved the ship name HYDROGEN.
