Zeebrugge celebrated the christening of CLdN’s ro-ro DELPHINE on 20 September 2018. The ceremony was held in the evening, to have the best conditions for the fireworks.

  • Wightlink’s hybrid car ferry, VICTORIA OF WIGHT, was officially named on Thursday 20 September by Her Royal Highness Sophie The Countess of Wessex.
  • Transmediterranea’s new ferry VILLA DEL TEROR has been on sea trials and could be ready in a month.
  • Ferry GALAXY has ended its charter with Africa Morocco Link (AML) and has left Algeciras bound for Trapani, Italy.
  • CLdN Ro-Ro started to offer three direct calls between Rotterdam and Leixoes. Departure Leixoes: Monday, Wednesday, Saturday. Departure Rotterdam Monday, Wednesday, Friday.

Container Ship Creates Ro-Ro Space

P&O Ferries has deployed the container ship ‘WEGA to start a service between Zeebrugge and Teesport.

P&O Ferries already offers a ro-ro service with six sailings a week on Zeebrugge-Teesport, with BORE SONG and MISTRAL.

The container service will create more space for ro-ro freight on the ro-ro ships.

  • The Greek islands of Agios Efstratios and Lemnos line are unhappy with the ferries. They used to have the EXPRESS PEGASUS from Hellenic Seaways. During summer it was proven too small. It will now be replaced by Seajets’ 1975-built AQUA BLUE, ex IERAPETRA and this for the next three years.
  • Eckerö had a great summer (June-August) on all lines: +10% passengers.
  • The increase is mainly due to the fantastic growth of the traffic between Helsinki and Tallinn. Healthy growth for cars and freight.
  • Canary Bridge Seaways, the new joint venture from Baleària and Fred. Olsen Express, will operate two ferries. One will be the chartered CLIPPER PENNANT. The two companies have agreed to operate ferries between the Iberian Peninsula and the Canary Islands. The service will start mid-November.
  • Brittany Ferries’ high-speed ferry NORMANDIE EXPRESS closed its season on 18 September. After annual maintenance she will be laid-up in Le Havre. She will re-enter service in May.

  • A drawing of STENA VINGA has emerged on Stena Line’s website. The former HAMMERODDE is at the Landskrona shipyard to be prepared for her new role on Gothenburg-Frederikshavn.
  • Unity Line added its 8th ship on the Trelleborg -Świnoujście route (2 September). With 1,830 Lane meter of freight deck, the COPERNICUS is primarily intended for cargo.
  • CLdN starts its Zeebrugge-Santander ro-ro service on 18 September: two direct sailings per week in two directions, with two dedicated ships.

  • DFDS is approaching yards for the replacement of the two IJmuiden-Newcastle ro-pax ferries.
  • Greece has been hit by a ferry strike, which originally was only to happen on Monday 4 September. Eventually a second 24-hour strike was added on Tuesday. Trade union PNO wanted to see a 5% increase in wages and effectively obtained 2%.
  • STENA CARRIER has been renamed MEXICO STAR and her flag changed to Mexico. She has been acquired by Baja Ferries.

  • P&O Ferries’ PRIDE OF KENT returned to service on Calais – Dover after over five months out of service after her grounding.
  • Ro-pax EUROFERRY CORFU has arrived at Marseille to begin her charter to Corsica Linea. She will be renamed VIZZAVONA.
  • Genoa is grappling with space. The Spinelli group, the company managing the terminal at which the Tirrenia ships operate, rang the alarm bell by saying that the Malta Line could be terminated. Reason: lack of space, and because ofthe slow moving of cargo.
  • Africa Morocco Link (AML) will charter GALAXY from European Seaways for the route Algeciras – Tanger Med.
  • TT Line’s PETER PAN is soon going to re-enter service after having been at the yard in Bremerhaven for a lengthening operation.

  • Bridgemans Services Group LP (BSG) has reported that their ro-ro ferry CABO STAR will be available for charter as from July. The vessel is operating under a contract for Trinidad and Tobago’s Ministry of Works and Transport (MOWT).
  • After a three-month charter in the Caribbean island of St Kitts the GNV ro-pax EXCELLENT is back in Italy. She has been serving as an educational facility for the Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica, after the island was severely damaged by Hurricane Maria in September.
  • Kefalonian Lines has bought the MIRTIDIOTISSA from Aqua Ferries. Probably she will be deployed on the Patras – Ithaka – Sami – Kyllini route.
