Portsmouth Launches UK’s First Multi-Berth Shore Power System

By 2026 Newsletter week 32

Portsmouth International Port has commissioned the UK’s first multi-berth, multi-user, multi-frequency shore power system, enabling ferries and cruise ships to switch off their engines while alongside.

During the final testing phase, Brittany Ferries’ hybrid-electric ST MALO and GUILLAUME DE NORMANDIE became the first ferries to connect to the system. Cruise ships AIDAsol and AMERA also participated in the commissioning process.

The £24.4 million project, funded by £19.8 million from the UK Department for Transport and £4.6 million from Portsmouth City Council, will eventually allow up to three vessels to connect simultaneously. The port expects this capability to become operational later this year.

From 2027, the shore power installation is expected to reduce emissions by around 20,000 tonnes of CO₂e, supporting Portsmouth’s ambition to become the UK’s first zero-emission port by 2050.

Despite the milestone, Portsmouth International Port says electricity costs remain a challenge and is calling on the UK Government to make shore power more economically attractive for ports and shipping companies.

Portsmouth International Port Saves £138,000 on Electricity Through Solar Power

By 2025 Newsletter week 30

Portsmouth International Port has saved £138,058 in electricity costs over the past year, thanks to its 2,200 solar panels (1.2MW) installed across terminal roofs and car lane canopies.

On sunny days, the port can operate completely off-grid.

The panels have supplied 21% of the port’s total electricity demand in 2023/24.

The new terminal extension paid just £41 in electricity, saving £14,690 by drawing only 0.28% from the grid.

The initiative supports the port’s goal to become the UK’s first net-zero emissions port by 2050.

A green revolution begins at Portsmouth’s Port as a £19.8m grant is secured

By 2023 Newsletter week 37

Portsmouth International Port has been awarded £19.8m from the Zero Emissions Vessels and Infrastructure competition (ZEVI), funded by UK Government and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK. The grant will allow them to embark on a groundbreaking decarbonisation project with Brittany Ferries, alongside the University of PortsmouthMSE InternationalB4TIOTICS and Swanbarton.

The SEA CHANGE project will design, build and operate a ‘shore power’ system across the three busiest berths at Portsmouth International Port. This will allow visiting ferry or cruise ships to turn off their engines when in the port, as they will be able to ‘plug-in’ and use green electricity to run their onboard systems.

Condor’s new ship arrives in Portsmouth

By 2023 Newsletter week 30

Wednesday 3 August 2023, Portsmouth International Port welcomed CONDOR ISLANDER, the latest vessel in the fleet for Channel Island ferry service Condor, as part of berthing trials before it officially enters service in the autumn.

Andrew Williamson, Portsmouth International Port’s head of cruise and ferry said: “As a lifeline service to the Channel Islands Condor Ferries plays a crucial role making sure goods and passengers can travel efficiently and safely. This second ship in Portsmouth means more choice for both passengers and also extra resilience for freight too.”

As a critical shipping route for Channel Island trade, Portsmouth International Port and Condor Ferries recently agreed a new long-term deal, which cements their partnership until 2033. With sailings 364 days a year, the new addition of the Condor Islander and 10-year agreement, provides certainty for this vital freight and passenger service.

John Napton, Condor’s CEO, said, “We are making a few alterations from Islander’s previous operator so there are different requirements involved. Changes include installing a duty-free shop, changes to overnight cabin configurations and refreshing the passenger lounges.”

CONDOR ISLANDER was acquired by Condor in April 2023 from New Zealand, where she was operating for StraitNZ as the STRAITSMAN.
