By | 2020 Newsletter week 12 | No Comments

The Grandi Navi Veloci-controlled ferry SPLENDID will be ready to accommodate patients as from next Monday, according to what Giovanni Totti, head of the Liguria Region said.

The vessel is moored in the port of Genoa and some 25 cabins on Deck 7 have been already fitted with some specific equipment and services to accommodate affected people.

The ship capacity for hosting patients may be double soon and can reach 100 persons, following some refitting still ongoing onboard.

Following the idea launched by Grandi Navi Veloci, also some other companies in Italy (such as Moby, Grimaldi and Adria Ferries) said they would be pleased to offer their ferries for the same purpose. Charter fees and adaptation works would be paid by the Italian public body Protezione Civile, in charge for managing the coronavirus emergency.

Grimaldi, GNV And Tirrenia Competing For The New Ropax Terminal In Civitavecchia

The president of the Civitavecchia port authority, Francesco Maria di Majo, recently confirmed that a public tender is expected to be launched soon, in order to put on the market the new Darsena Traghetti terminal. Three industry players expressed their interest.

Ferry Shipping News understood from sources familiar with the matter that the three companies soon to bid for the new infrastructure are Grimaldi Group, MSC-controlled Grandi Navi Veloci, and Tirrenia, part of Moby group.

The Darsena Traghetti is a new terminal, currently still under construction. Once completed, the terminal will offer six 240m berths for ropax vessels.

The preferred bidder, according to what di Majo explained, will have to maximise not only passengers but also roro and automotive traffic in the port.

Earlier this year GNV was rumored to be in negotiation for taking a minority share in the ferry company Africa Morocco Link operating between the ports of Tanger and Algeciras with a fleet of three ferries.

Instead last July Gianluigi Aponte, founder of MSC, publicly said that Grandi Navi Veloci will currently not proceed with the order for two ro-pax ferries, which were previously announced. They were going to be built at the GSI Shipyard in China.

Grandi Navi Veloci Puts Order For New GSI Ships On Hold

MSC-controlled Grandi Navi Veloci will currently not proceed with the order for two ro-pax ferries, which were previously announced. They were going to be built at the GSI Shipyard in China.

At the annual general meeting of the Italian shipowners association (Assarmatori), Gianluigi Aponte, chairman of MSC Group, stated: “I can say that we are still considering the investment. However, the main issue with the shipyard is the price”.

The four ro-pax vessels (plus a further four units in options) jointly ordered in China by GNV and Onorato Armatori in 2017, have a capacity for 2,500 passengers and crew and offer 3,765 lane metres. The first and third ships should have been delivered to Grandi Navi Veloci, while Onorato (which instead recently confirmed the order) will take delivery of the other two. The first vessel for Onorato will come into service late 2021.

GNV In Negotiation for a 25% Stake in Africa Morocco Link?

By | 2019 Newsletter week 25 | No Comments

The MSC-controlled ferry company Grandi Navi Veloci seems to be in advanced negotiation for taking a minority share in Africa Morocco Link.

The rumour was reported by several media both in Morocco and in Greece while the Genoa-headquartered company preferred not to comment on the issue upon request from Ferry Shipping News.

Africa Morocco Link operates between the ports of Tanger and Algeciras with a fleet of three ferries offering regulars sailings between the two sides of the Mediterranea sea.

As of today, the company founded in 2016 is jointly participated by the Moroccan BMCE Bank (51%) and the Greek group Attica (49%). According to what local media reported, BMCE bank should dismiss the AML’s majority share under its control before the end of the third year from the company foundation and that would be the reason why Grandi Navi Veloci was contacted as a potential investor.

Grandi Navi Veloci Relaunch The Genoa-Olbia Link With ‘Rebranded’ Ships

Six years after closing down the Genoa – Olbia route, Grandi Navi Veloci decided to relaunch the route between Northern Italy and the port at the heart of the Costa Smeralda on the island of Sardinia.

The service is expected to start on 25 May and will last until 29 September, in parallel with the other maritime link operated between Genoa and Porto Torres. “With two routes and 280 sailings, we are going to offer a capacity for 700,000 passengers to be transported between Sardinia and the Italian mainland” said Mateo Catani, CEO of the ferry company.

Interesting detail for the lovers of the Italian rock star Vasco Rossi: some of the GNV’s ferries set to be deployed on the Sardinia routes will entirely be covered by an advertisement campaign for the concert to be held on 19 and 20 June. Vasco Rossi revealed the new layout of the ferry EXCELSIOR on his Facebook page.

The vessel collided with the quay and a gantry crane in the port of Barcelona on 31 October. The crane capsized and took fire.

The impact damaged the bulbous bow.
