Seaspan Ferries Will Retrofit A Hybrid Electric Ferry With Blue Whale Energy Storage System

Corvus Energy ‘Blue Whale’ is a new large-scale energy storage system (ESS)—a groundbreaking battery system designed for large ships with high zero-emission energy demand, such as cruise ships and large ferries. Its rack-free design of stacking modular blocks provides the industry’s highest volumetric battery room energy density and, consequently, maximizes a ship owner’s passenger or payload opportunities.

For its inaugural field trial, the Blue Whale battery system will be installed on board SEASPAN RELIANT, a roro ferry built in 2016 that sails near Vancouver.

Corvus Energy will perform field trials for its new large-scale Blue Whale ESS on board a Seaspan Ferries vessel starting during the summer of 2021. Blue Whale is scheduled for commercial deliveries in Spring 2022.

Corvus – Toyota Partnership: First Marine Fuel-Cell On A Vessel In 2023

Corvus Energy is set to start development and production of sustainable, large scale maritime-certified hydrogen fuel-cell systems in partnership with Toyota

  • Production will be in Bergen, Norway
  • Toyota key partner with 30 years of experience in mass production fuel-cell technology
  • Corvus is leading a collaboration with Norwegian partners Equinor, shipowners Norled and Wilhelmsen, ship design company LMG Marin, the NCE Maritime CleanTech cluster and R&D institution of the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN) to develop and produce modularised and cost-effective PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) fuel-cell systems for the international marine market
  • The project has received EUR 5.2m in funding from state agency Innovation Norway.
  • The development is scheduled to showcase its first marine fuel-cell system onboard a vessel in 2023 and the product will be marine certified and available for commercial delivery from 2024.

Corvus Energy Opens A New Battery Factory In Norway

On 6 September, Corvus Energy celebrated the grand opening of its automated battery factory in Bergen, Norway.

“There is an electric revolution going on in the maritime sector, and we want to deliver the best solutions in the industry,” says Geir Bjørkeli, CEO of Corvus Energy. “The Corvus team in Vancouver developed the groundbreaking battery solution that accelerated adoption of zero-emission and hybrid marine propulsion systems, particularly in Norway. Shell Ventures Invests In Corvus Energy

The investment is a step towards Shell’s ambition to decrease the carbon footprint of the energy products they sell by around 20% by 2035 and by around 50% by 2050, in step with society.

Corvus Energy is a leading developer and supplier of advanced energy storage systems (ESS) for maritime, offshore, subsea and port applications. Their range of lithium-ion battery ESSs are integral to the propulsion and power management systems of more than half of the battery-hybrid and zero-emission vessels worldwide. Corvus Energy Launches New Battery For Cruise, Ro-Pax And Ro-Ro Ships With Unlimited Capacity

Corvus Energy, the well-known supplier of batteries for hybrid and zero-emission vessels, is introducing its next generation Energy Storage System (ESS), called ‘Corvus Blue Whale’. It is ideal for applications that require low charge/discharge rate combined with very high energy demand such as Cruise, Ro-Pax and Ro-Ro vessels.

By using energy-dense battery cells and a space-saving design, its volume per kWh is reduced by 50% and the weight per kWh is reduced by amazing 30%. Its modular design uses quick connectors for easy commissioning and reduced installation costs.

Corvus Blue Whale has no limitations with regards to size.

Corvus Energy has completed the installation of a 5,5 MWh battery energy storage systems (ESS) for each of the two Ro-Pax cruise ferries CRUISE BARCELONA and CRUISE ROMA from Grimaldi Group.

The ‘mega batteries’ will allow the Grimaldi cruise ferries to turn off the engines and operate solely on battery power and with zero emissions for up to four hours during port stay.

Corvus Energy Secures Contracts For Two More Battery-Powered Ferries

Corvus Energy has been selected by Norwegian Electric System (NES) to supply lithium ion battery-based energy storage systems (ESS) for two new all-electric ferries being built by Havyard for Fjord1. The ferries will operate on the Magerholm-Sykkylven route.
This follows a previous order in November 2017 to supply the ESSs for three similar newbuilt Fjord1 ferries that will operate on the Hareid-Sulesund route.
