Color Line have amended their services to take account of the Norwegian entry restrictions.
A new analysis from Menon Economics and the University of Southeast Norway shows that up to 30,000 jobs can be lost in tourism if Norway does not take necessary measures for the industry. Color Line has sent a press release about this.
By opening the borders to the Nordic countries and Germany this summer, approx. NOK 14 billion of revenue from foreign tourists coming to Norway by sea in the summer of 2020 could be saved. The analysis concludes that opening the borders of these countries will be the most powerful single initiative to revive the tourism industry this summer.
- +1.8% passengers (3,850,623)
- -3.0% freight (177,085)
- +3.5% operating revenue (NOK 5,320 million)
- +7.4% operating expenses (NOK -4,215 million)
The difference primarily represents increased bunker costs due to higher oil prices and weaker Norwegian currency than last year, increased operating costs as a result of the start-up of the ro-ro ship COLOR CARRIER, as well as one-off costs related to the start-up of COLOR HYBRID.
Color Line’s BOHUS is ready to sail -within the next few days- for Piraeus as she was purchased -a few months ago- by Red Star Ferries.
The ship was renamed IONIAN STAR and she left the port of Sandefjord for Piraeus where she is expected to arrive within the next few days.
The classic ferry is expected to be introduced between Brindisi (Italy) – Valona (Albania) and she will probably replace her older fleet mate RED STAR 1 (5.762gt/1965).
IONIAN STAR until recently served the Sandefjord-Stromstad run and she was replaced by COLOR HYBRID.
She is also a sister ship to Seajets AQUA SOLUTION which was purchased in 2018, while her other fleet mate EUROPEAN STAR is still at the port of Brindisi without having any service for the summer of 2019.

Color Line has started to operate the freight-only ferry COLOR CARRIER on the route Kiel – Oslo as of 11 January 2019.
On the occasion of its inaugural call, the Lord Mayor of Kiel, Dr Ulf Kämpfer, Port of Kiel Managing Director Dr Dirk Claus and the Executive Manager of Sartori & Berger, Jens Broder Knudsen, welcomed the captain and handed over the traditional inaugural plaques.
The 1,775 lane meter ro-ro ferry offers three roundtrips a week complementing the daily departures of the large cruise ferries.
The freight ferry is an additional growth momentum for the port of Kiel and enables the resumption of intermodal transshipment at the Norwegenkai terminal. The aim is to transship as much cargo as possible via rail.
In order to ensure smooth handling processes for the additional cargo units, the operating area on the Norwegenkai terminal has been expanded by 10,000 m2 already some time ago.
On Thursday, 15 November, Color Line and Ulstein Verft marked the construction start-up on the world’s largest plug-in hybrid ship, the COLOR HYBRID.
The Polish-built hull has been placed in the dock hall, and workers are now busy with the ship’s completion before hand-over next summer.
The ferry is a good example of the interaction in the maritime cluster. The yard has contracted the sub-suppliers to this project, of which about 70 per cent are local. The Ålesund area is famous for its many maritime companies.
About 100 of the suppliers are Norwegian. The ship has been designed by Fosen Yard.COLOR HYBRID will be servicing Sandefjord-Strömstad from summer 2019.
