Austal and Gotlandsbolaget sign MOU to construct a multi fuel, low emission, high-speed catamaran

Austal and Gotlandsbolaget have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop a construction contract for the ‘Gotland Horizon X’ catamaran concept, first announced in April 2023.

‘Gotland Horizon X’ is a high-speed aluminium catamaran that will utilise gas turbines in a combined cycle to transport up to 1,450 passengers, cargo and vehicles between the Swedish mainland and the island of Gotland.

Under the terms of the MOU and proposed construction contract, the high-speed catamaran will be designed by Austal and constructed at the Austal Philippines shipyard.

Fjord Line Welcomes New Catamaran

Friday February 26 saw the delivery of Fjord Line’s new high-speed catamaran, “FJORD FSTR”.

The 110m-long 31m-wide vessel was built by Austal in the Philippines.

Speed: 37 knots

Capacity: 410 vehicles and 1200 passengers

Time for crossing: 2 hours and 15 minutes between Kristiansand and Hirtshals

She still has to make the long journey from the Philippines to Norway.

Austal To Build Another High-Speed Catamaran For Molslinjen’s Bornholm Route

A follow-up order to the 109m high-speed catamaran EXPRESS 4, the new Auto Express 115 will be the largest ferry (by volume) ever built by Austal.

Highlights:

  • A new generation of medium speed engines that are LNG compatible, with the potential to upgrade to LNG fuel in the future.
  • 1,610 passengers / 450 cars (or 617 lane metres for trucks + 257 cars) over two vehicle decks.
  • This increases ferry capacity by about 14 %, which solves some of the capacity problems Bornholm has experienced during the recent peak season.
  • Service speed close to 37 knots,
  • Bornholm route, between Ystad and Rønne, from early 2022.

Currently operating on the route are MAX (900 pax and 240 cars) and EXPRESS 1 (1,200 pax and 417 cars).

Austal-built EXPRESS 4 Is On Its Way To Denmark

High-speed 109m catamaran EXPRESS 4 has set sail for Denmark to join the Molslinjen fleet.

Featuring an advanced design with an optimised hull form to minimise fuel consumption and Austal’s Ride Control System for superior sea-keeping and comfort, she will carry over 1000 passengers, 425 cars at speeds up to 40 knots.

Austal To Build A Fast Ferry For Trinidad And Tobago

Austal has entered into a contract with the National Infrastructure Development Company (NIDCO) which is owned by the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago’s (GORTT).

The contract is to design and build a 94m high-speed vehicle and passenger catamaran to be delivered in mid-2020.

The vessel is a derivative of the two 109m AutoExpress ships designed in the last two years by Austal.

The ship will be built in Austal’s new shipyard in Vung Tau, Vietnam. This new facility commenced operations on 1 November this year and has already successfully delivered large aluminium modules for a 109m catamaran being built in the Philippines.

The 94m AutoExpress is designed to carry 926 passengers and 250 cars at speeds of 37.5 knots and will operate a daily service between the islands of Trinidad and Tobago.
