DFDS in May: Freight up 31% Following Lockdowns in 2020

  • Total RoRo volumes in May 2021 were 31.2% above 2020 (and 4% above May 2019)
  • The extraordinary volume growth in May 2021 vs 2020 reflected a recovery from the significant volume reductions in May 2020 caused by lockdowns.
  • Volumes were above May 2019 in each of the four business units mainly carrying freight, i.e. North Sea, Baltic Sea, Channel and Mediterranean. Trading between the EU and the UK continued to be robust.
  • The total number of passengers in May 2021 was 27.3% below 2020 reflecting the continued tight travel restrictions.

Tallink re-opens Tallinn-Stockholm Route after nearly 16 Months on 9 July 2021

Tallink Grupp will re-open the popular Tallinn-Stockholm ferry route on 9 July 2021, after nearly 16 months of suspension of the route due to travel restrictions between Estonia and Sweden. The route will initially be operated with one vessel, BALTIC QUEEN, with departures from Tallinn and Stockholm every other day.

Although the route will re-open to the public on Friday, 9 July, the company will operate a special cruise to Stockholm also on 7 July, where Tallink’s cooperation partners and employees will have the first opportunity to sail again on the route.

Overview of Seajets High-Speed Crafts Launched in June 2021

HSC POWER JET was launched on the Heraklion-Santorini-Ios-Naxos-Mykonos-Paros line on June 11, 2021. The ship was introduced on that line last summer (August 2020) and will compete with Minoan Lines’ SANTORINI PALACE.

The popular HSC WORLD CHAMPION JET was launched on the Piraeus-Syros-Mykonos-Naxos-Ios-Santorini line on June 11 as well. The fast ferry will depart every morning at 7:00.

HSC SUPERRUNNER JET, former SUPERRUNNER of Golden Star Ferries, will be introduced on the new Thessaloniki-Skiathos-Skopelos-Alonissos-Mandoudi (Evia) line on June 18, 2021. The ship will sail from the port of Thessaloniki 3 times a week, while during August she will add one more departure. She will depart at 7.00 in the morning and will be the fastest connection between Northern Greece and the Sporades islands.

Golden Star Ferries’ HSC SUPER EXPRESS Enters Service on June 18

HSC SUPEREXPRESS of Golden Star Ferries will be introduced on the new Rafina-Tinos-Mykonos-Naxos-Paros-Ios-Santorini line on June 18, 2021.

After the sale of 3 of its high-speed vessels to Seajets, Golden Star Ferries makes a fleet reshuffling and launches its luxurious High-Speed Craft from Rafina to Cyclades for the first time. Her presence in the port of Rafina seems to affect Seajets as well, which has no presence for the summer season 2021.

Shore Power for the DFDS Ferries in Copenhagen

The work to establish a shore power facility at the DFDS Seaways ferry terminal in Copenhagen is in full swing. The initiative is a joint collaboration between CMP (Copenhagen Malmö Ports) and DFDS, with the Swedish company Actemium as contractor and COWI as technical advisor.

The facility is expected to be operational in late summer 2021 and will make it possible for DFDS’ ferries CROWN SEAWAYS and PEARL SEAWAYS to significantly reduce the ships’ CO2 emissions while in port.

King Mohammed VI of Morocco pleads for Fair Ferry Prices

In an official statement (Statement, in French), HRH Mohammed VI, King of Morocco, asks all companies involved in the seasonal migration of Moroccan expats, to keep the levels of pricing fair, for both ferry crossings and flights.

Recently the Moroccan Government stated that the return of Moroccan emigrants –known as Operation Marhaba– will be made exclusively “from the same transit ports as last year” (= Marseille, Sète, Genoa). Again, no Spain.

The Government asks for more capacity on the routes, and it is also rumoured to look at a connection Tanger Med – Portimao (Portugal).

Planned capacity is actually 48,000 pax and 15,000 cars, every week between 15 June and 15 September (source: El Confidencial)

Officially the decision not to use the Spanish ports is because of the pandemic, but most observers feel it is a political issue.

Ropax EUROFERRY EGNAZIA to be Moved from Grimaldi Euromed to Trasmed GLE’s Fleet

EUROFERRY EGNAZIA is set to be transferred soon from Grimaldi Euromed’s fleet to the new Trasmed Logistica Espana, some sources revealed to Ferry Shipping News.

The vessel, which has a capacity for 546 passengers and 2,400 lane meters of roro capacity, will be deployed on the routes mainland Spain – Balearics islands.

Earlier this month, Grimaldi’s subsidiary in Spain received the green light from the competent authorities of the Balearic Islands to handle roro in the ports of Palma de Mallorca, Mahon and Ibiza.
