Interferry has launched a call for papers addressing the ‘Power and People’ themes of its 46th annual conference taking place in Seattle, USA, this October.

Under the Power theme, presentations are invited on any sustainable, future-proof vessel powering options and the related challenges – notably the regulatory targets for greenhouse gas emissions reductions of some 50% by 2030 and a ‘net zero’ scenario by 2050.

The People sessions aim to explore issues facing operators regarding staffing and succession planning, with particular attention to training and retention at a time when the maritime sector, like all industries, is facing an acute shortage of skilled labour.

Financing of Havila Voyages’ ships in jeopardy

By | 2022 Newsletter week 15 | No Comments

On Friday, April 8th, the EU extended sanctions against Russian companies. GTLK, the owner of the leasing company in Hong Kong that has financed HAVILA CAPELLA, is among the sanctioned companies.

Havila Voyages assumes that the sanctions will prevent GTLK from carrying out the financing of the three remaining vessels being built at the Tersan shipyard in Turkey.

“We support sanctions against Russia in this dire situation the world is in and are now working to refinance HAVILA CAPELLA to break all ties with sanctioned and Russian-owned companies”, says CEO Bent Martini at Havila Voyages.

“Havila Capella is the only one of our ships that is financed and leased from GTLK. The remaining ships are owned by the Tersan shipyard until we take delivery of them”.

HAVILA CAPELLA is awaiting approval from the Norwegian authorities to sail. Il it cannot sail on Thursday April 14, the whole 11-day voyage will be cancelled. This will be decided on Thursday April 14, noon time.

After two years, passengers can travel again between Morocco and Spain

By | 2022 Newsletter week 15 | No Comments

The re-opening of the borders between Morocco and Spain has become effective on April 12 (only passengers), and from April 18 with vehicles.

The news comes after Morocco closed air and sea connections with Spain and its land borders with the enclaves of Ceuta on March 13, 2020 as a measure against the coronavirus.

The re-establishment of passenger traffic is expected to create a lot of movements in the coming months.

Despite the previously existing restrictions, some ships continued to connect Morocco and Spain, through the Strait of Gibraltar, thus guaranteeing the flow of cargo between the two countries.

Second tender by Sicily Region with no participants for a new ropax ferry

By | 2022 Newsletter week 15 | No Comments

Sicily Region has received no offers following the tender officially launched some weeks ago for finding shipyards interested in building a first new ropax vessel to be deployed on the routes to and from Lampedusa and Pantelleria islands.

A first tender launched last year already failed at finding interested parties for building two units.

Tender price had been increased to EUR 100 million for one vessel (of which 4.5 million are a fixed value related to safety equipment), while last year the same contract was worth EUR 130 million for two units.

As a consequence, the plan of the Sicily Region to have a first unit ready for deployment before the summer season 2024 will have to be reviewed.
