Chinese shipyard CIMC Raffles has delivered BALTIC ENABLER to its owner WALLENIUS SOL (22 June).

BALTIC ENABLER, together with her sister ship BOTNIA ENABLER delivered earlier in the spring, has been named RoRo vessel of the year at the Ferry Shipping Summit 2022.

She is considered to be the world’s largest ice-rated ConRo vessel with multi-fuel operation.

The newly built vessel, which has Finnish-Swedish ice class 1A, an LOA of 242 metres and a beam of 35.2 metres, is sailing under the Swedish flag. In addition to their size, the Enablers are characterized by their high environmental performance and a design specially suited to the shipping requirements of the Swedish and Finnish base industry. According to Swedish Environmental Research Institute (IVL) estimates, the vessels will be able to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 63%, NOx by 96% and SOx and particulates by 99%.

Once in Europe she will begin trafficking her regular Zeebrugge-Antwerpen-Kokkola-Skelleftea-Oulu-Kemi-Travemünde route.

Wallenius Marine in collaboration with Knud E Hansen led the design work and the construction project for the two sister ships. Wallenius Marine will also be responsible for manning and technical operation of the new vessels.

Oslofjord: less departures to create more stability

By | 2022 Newsletter week 25 | No Comments

Ruter As, the joint management company for public transport in the Oslo area, will reduce the number of departures to provide passengers with a more predictable offer.

There are currently many cancelled departures which means customers are experiencing a too unstable route offer. They do not get good enough information about which ferries are running.

In this way, the company removes the uncertainty, long queues and waiting times.

The changes from 27 June mean that the departures for route B2, the ferry to Hovedøya, Gressholmen and Langøyene, will be reduced from half-hour routes to hourly routes.

The adjusted offer will primarily be served with the three new electric ferries, which all have room for 350 passengers. (OSLOFJORD series from Boreal)

The challenges are still related to the pandemic:

  • Delayed new ship deliveries
  • This affected crewing and training
  • Difficulties in recruitment

DFDS Monthly Volume Report: Freight Up 11%, Passenger Recovery on Track

By | 2022 Newsletter week 24 | No Comments

Ferry – freight: Total volumes in May 2022 were 10.8% above 2021 driven by higher volumes in all business units, except Baltic Sea.

Channel’s volumes were elevated by P&O Ferries’ suspension of sailings for most of the month compared to last year.

North Sea volumes were above 2021 as higher activity on most UK routes offset lower industrial flows between Sweden and the Continent, partly due to supply chain bottlenecks in the automotive sector.

Volumes in the Mediterranean network continued to grow supported by higher capacity. The war in Ukraine lowered Baltic Sea volumes between mainly Germany and Lithuania compared to 2021.

For the last twelve months 2022-21, the total transported freight lane metres increased 1.5% to 43.8m from 43.1m in 2021-20.

Ferry – passenger: The number of passengers increased eightfold to 296k equal to 68% of volumes in May 2019, the latest comparable month pre-Covid-19. Transport segments are recovering faster than leisure segments as the number of cars was at 89% compared to 2019. Channel’s volumes were elevated by P&O Ferries’ suspension of sailings for most of the month.

For the last twelve months 2022-21, the total number of passengers was 1.6m compared to 1.0m in 2021-20 and 5.1m in 2019, the latter being the latest pre-Covid-19 year.

Two Russian railway ferries to get an official autonomy class

By | 2022 Newsletter week 24 | No Comments

Rosmorport signed a contract with Sitronics for equipment of two autonomous rail/vehicle carriers. Within a year, both ships are expected to be equipped with a complete set of autonomous navigation systems and receive an official autonomous class.

The contract assumes that the full set of systems including autonomous navigation system, optical surveillance and analysis system, coordinated motion control system, remote engine, and technical monitoring will be installed as well as a remote control center will be established in Saint-Petersburg. The vessels will be able to navigate in various autonomous modes: automatically, under the control at the remote control station, and traditionally, by the crew on board.

“The autonomous navigation technology has been tried on several ships for more than a year. In 2021 alone, 28 voyages were carried out, in which the technology was tested and proved to be applicable in practice”, said Nikolai Pozhidaev, President of Sitronics Group.

LMG Marin to make the concept design for the new BC Ferries “Major Class”

By | 2022 Newsletter week 23 | No Comments

LMG Marin has been selected by BC Ferries as design agent for its new Major class vessels.

The first stage of the project will soon start with the overall goal to achieve a zero-emission design by use of proven technology. This concept design will be later further finetuned into a basic design and a specification package that will be used for contracting the new ships at a yard.

The new Major Class ferries are expected to be operational by 2029.
