Cherbourg-Bayonne rail motorway: Brittany Ferries gives the green light

Brittany Ferries has given the go-ahead to a new rail-freight link between Cherbourg and Bayonne. The ferry company first announced the rail project back in February 2020, shortly before the COVID-19 health crisis hit, forcing a reduction in ferry services for nearly two years. But while the project—which Brittany Ferries deems strategic—was delayed, it was never cancelled.

During the pause, Brittany Ferries worked with French rail network operator SNCF Réseau and the Ministry for Ecological Transition to determine the routing for the new service, which will provide daily return journeys between Cherbourg and Mouguerre. Following a study into the modification of four railway tunnels on the Atlantic corridor route to allow the lowest available wagons to pass through, a framework agreement was signed, allowing the project to enter its concrete development phase.

With support from the State, Europe, and the regions of Normandie and Nouvelle Aquitaine, Brittany Ferries will open the ‘rail motorway’ linking the port of Cherbourg to the European Freight Centre at Mouguerre, near Bayonne, thereby connecting Spain to the UK and Ireland via the French railway network.

The launch of the new service, initially planned for 2022, is now expected by mid-2024.

Ærø Municipality votes for two new electric ferries

On 20 April 2022, a majority in Ærø Municipality’s municipal council decided to enter into an agreement on a commitment of DKK 72 million with the Danish Transport Authority for the construction of two new electric ferries on the busy Ærøskøbing – Svendborg route.

On 22 December 2021, it was announced that Ærø Municipality had been allocated almost DKK 72 million from the Ministry of Transport’s green ferry pool for a total of DKK 233 million.

The municipal council had to consider whether it wanted to use the DKK 72 million, which according to the budget entails a self-financing of DKK 336 million. After a debate in the hall, the commitment was given, and the budget approved, and Ærøfærgerne can thus start the concrete work.

The design of the new ferries and the business model for the replacement will be considered by the municipal council on an ongoing basis until the autumn of 2022.

HAVILA CASTOR on its way to Norway

Havila Voyages took delivery of its second ship, HAVILA CASTOR, at the Tersan shipyard in Turkey.

HAVILA CASTOR will start sailing the coastal route Bergen – Kirkenes on Tuesday 10th of May.

The ship has a market value of around NOK 1.2 billion and is financed with equity and a loan of EUR 46 million from Tersan shipyard and the shipyard’s bank. The loan is for a period of 3 months.

The initial financing could not be carried out, because of the Russian embargo. The vessel is owned by the company HK Ship V AS – a 100% owned subsidiary of Havila Kystruten Operations AS.

Havila Voyages is already in the process of refinancing HAVILA CASTOR and the two remaining ships that will be delivered later this year, as well as HAVILA CAPELLA.

Second vessel for Hansa Destination entered service

RoRo vessel ELIANA MARINO made its first trip for Hansa Destination between Rostock and Nynäshamn on Monday April 25.

Two vessels mean doubling the freight capacity and increase the flexibility for carriers. With this extra vessel Hansa Destinations goes from three to six departures a week in both directions.

Departs from Rostock on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 19.00 with arrival in Nynäshamn 15.00 the next day.

Departs from Nynäshamn on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 19:00 with arrival in Rostock at 15.00 the next day.

Departs from Nynäshamn on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 19.00.

Departs from Rostock on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 19.00.

Tallink Grupp sells cargo vessel SEA WIND and reorganises cargo vessel operations on Muuga-Vuosaari and Paldiski-Kapellskär routes

Tallinn Swedish Line Ltd sold roro SEA WIND (1972) and delivered her to the new owners, 26 April 2022.

As a result of the sale, Tallink Grupp has reorganised its cargo operations on the Muuga-Vuosaari and Paldiski-Kapellskär routes. (schedules)

  • REGAL STAR will now operate on the Muuga-Vuosaari route in the former SEA WIND schedule
  • SAILOR will continue to operate on the Paldiski-Kapellskär route with extra departures

One team, one brand, one CLdN

Since 25 April, all CLdN companies (CLdN RoRo/CLdN Cargo/C.Ro Ports) will use the common brand name “CLdN”.

A common brand name is a logical next step for CLdN. By having further integrated the roro, ports and door-to-door activities over the past couple of years, closer cooperation and communication between different business departments was stimulated which boosts CLdN’s business development and continuous strive towards operational excellence.

Being able to offer fully integrated door-to-door and quay-to-quay transport using their own trailers, containers, port infrastructure and vessels is a unique strength, which ensures that robust and reliable transport solutions can be guaranteed to CLdN’s customers.

Passenger traffic boost for the Easter holidays 2022

According to the Hellenic Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy the passenger traffic from the ports of Attica for the Easter holidays was significantly increased compared to Easter 2021.

Specifically:

  • From the port of Piraeus to the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, Crete and the Saronic Gulf, the passenger traffic increased by 150%. In 2022, departed 166,609 passengers and 26,695 vehicles, while in 2021 the traffic was 66,563 passengers and 8,624 vehicles.
  • Passenger traffic from the port of Rafina increased by 579% during the same period. In 2022, departed for Cyclades 38,726 passengers and 10,088 vehicles, while in 2021 the traffic was 5,701 passengers and 1,878 vehicles.
  • The traffic at the port of Lavrio increased by 340% as well. This year departed 12,259 passengers and 3,447 vehicles while in 2021 the traffic was 2,786 passengers and 777 vehicles.

However, Ferry executives support that passenger traffic during Easter 2022 -compared to Easter 2019- was reduced by 20% to 25% on many ferry routes.

Saronic Ferries’ modernized ANTIGONI entered service on 22 April 2022

On 22 April 2022, the fully modernized ferry ANTIGONI of Saronic Ferries was introduced on the Piraeus – Souvala (Aegina) line. The vessel underwent an extensive conversion into a passenger ferry from 2019. Her conversion was delayed due to the pandemic. She was initially built as a landing ferry in 2010 and served the Rio – Antirio and Arkitsa – Edipsos lines as the POSIDONAS. On 30 July 2019, she was sold to Saronic Ferries for service in the Saronic Gulf and transformed into a modern passenger ferry.
