Almost six years after the death of their father, the unforgettable shipowner Aldo Grimaldi, his son Giovanni and the two daughters Isabella and Alessandra have decided to reorganize the company Grimaldi Holding which still owned the three RoPax ships FORZA, TENACIA and REGINA SEAWAYS.

The former two are currently bareboat chartered out to GNV (until 2028) while for the latter has just been prolonged the charter contract with DFDS.

All these three vessels were built in Italy at Nuovi Cantieri Apuania from 2008 to 2010.

Grimaldi Holding has been split up into three separate companies:

  • TENACIA: Grimaldi Investments Srl, 100% owned by Isabella Amelia Grimaldi
  • FORZA: Grimaldi Capital Srl, controlled by Alessandra Grimaldi
  • REGINA SEAWAYS: Grifin, Giovanni Grimaldi

The sister ships FORZA and TENACIA —owned by Grimaldi Holding— will start a new 5-year bareboat charter with Grandi Navi Veloci, starting in February.

Broker sources suggest that the daily rate should be EUR 14,500 for the first three years, 14,750 for the fourth and 15,000 for the fifth. No options included for extending the period or for purchasing the ro-pax sister vessels.

Since September 2020 both the ferries have been operating for GNV in sub-charter from Trasmediterranea.

Both have a capacity of 2,000 lane meters and 1,000 passengers and are currently deployed on the routes linking Italy mainland to Sicily (Civitavecchia – Palermo) and Spain with the Balearic Islands (Barcelona – Palma).

Aldo Grimaldi Passed Away At The Age Of 96

Aldo Grimaldi, chairman of the Genoa-based Grimaldi Holding and former president of the Italian shipowners’ association Confitarma, passed away at the age of 96.

Grandson of the shipowner Achille Lauro, he began his own activity creating with his other three brothers, Luigi, Mario and Guido, his first shipping company called Fratelli Grimaldi Armatori, first with cargo ships and then passengers, thus constituting the core of what would later become the Grimaldi Group.

Aldo Grimaldi was chairman of Grimaldi Holding, Grandi Navi Veloci, Grandi Traghetti and Gilnavi.

At the end of the 80s’ he decided to start designing ships with very different characteristics compared to the existing ones, with large cargo capacity for goods and cars in tow but fast, comfortable, with excellent services similar to those of cruise ships. The so-called “white ships” (MAJESTIC, SPLENDID, FANTASTIC, EXCELLENT, EXCELSIOR, SUPREMA and SUPERBA) are still operating today for GNV.

The last eight ships ordered by Aldo Grimaldi and delivered from 2007 were the eight ro-pax units called “blue ships” and built by Nuovi Cantieri Apuania. Three of them (ENERGIA renamed REGINA SEAWAYS, FORZA and TENACIA) are still controlled by Grimaldi Holding and chartered out to DFDS (the first) and to Trasmediterranea (the second and the third).
