ForSea: Increase in traffic despite pandemic

Throughout 2021, ForSea has sailed between Helsingborg-Helsingör according to the normal timetable regardless of the pandemic’s.

Freight traffic trends

  • +8.5% freight compared to 2020
  • +3.5% freight compared to 2019
  • This can be seen as an effect of changed consumption patterns, as more and more orders are placed online.

Passenger traffic trends

  • Shorter trips, preferably by car or train before air travel.
  • Holidays nearby, or touring” between Sweden and Denmark.
  • +12% passengers compared to 2020.
  • +13% increase in sales in the onboard shops compared with the normal year 2019

Environmental trends

  • Targets for reduced CO2 levels set for the year 2030 will be met as early as 2022.
  • Ferry AURORA continues to sail with battery operation.
  • The upgrade of TYCHO BRAHE’s batteries is expected to be completed shortly.
  • Calculations for 2022 show an expected reduction of 71% CO2 emissions compared to 2016.
  • New for the year are CO2 equivalents for all food served in restaurants and cafés. Thus, everything becomes measurable and the opportunity to produce more sustainable food is created. In addition, guests can easily compare the different offerings and make their own, active environmental choices.

Border Restrictions Halve International Ferry Travel from Denmark

Organisation Danish Shipping (Danske Rederier) has calculated that the total number of passengers for Scandlines, Fjord Line, ForSea and DFDS in June, July and August has largely been halved compared to the same period last year.

“The bad summer comes on top of a lost spring, and it would be naive to think that Danes, Germans, Swedes or Norwegians will start traveling as usual in the coming months. The situation at the borders is completely unpredictable, so the shipping companies are facing some challenging months, ”says Jacob K. Clasen, Deputy CEO.

At Scandlines, CEO Søren Poulsgaard Jensen believes that it is the border closure in particular that caused an impact.

Like other Danish ferry companies, Scandlines has used the government’s help packages to send employees home for salary compensation and help to cover fixed expenses. But the bad summer will still cost jobs in the shipping company, says Søren Poulsgaard Jensen to Søfart.

Kristian Durhuus Is ForSea’s New CEO

Kristian Durhuus succeeds Jens Ole Hansen, who has been acting as interim CEO of ForSea since February and who will now continue in his position as COO.

Since 2011, Kristian Durhuus has held the position of COO of Copenhagen Airport. Prior to that, he held managing roles within a number of larger organizations including LSG Lufthansa Service and G4S.

ForSea Sees Significant Environmental Progress

Throughout Q1, ForSea has operated the world’s largest battery-powered passenger ferries, AURORA and TYCHO BRAHE, on the Helsingborg-Helsingør route. The environmental benefits have been significant: The ferry operator’s total emissions of CO2 and harmful particles have been halved compared to the prior year.

Q1 results:

  • -4% Passengers 1.24 million (due to the fact that this year Easter is in Q2)
  • -5% Cars 227,000
  • +4% Buses 2,600
  • +0% Freight units 111,000
  • +1.7% Departures 12,100

Battery-Powered Ferries And New Name Generated Growth On The Helsingborg-Helsingör Route In Q4

In Q4 2018, ForSea inaugurated the two ferries Aurora and Tycho Brahe as the World’s largest battery-powered passenger ferries. Simultaneously, the ForSea brand was launched, and the introduction of battery-powered combined with the name change contributed significantly to an increase in the number of leisure passengers in the quarter. While the number of transported cars declined moderately, the strong growth in the number of transported trucks continued.

  • +2% trucks = 112,000 (109,000)
  • -2% cars = 260,000 (265,000)
  • +4% pax = 1.5 million (1.44 million)

ForSea Is The New Name For HH Ferries

HH Ferries, the operator linking Denmark and Sweden via Helsingør and Helsingborg, underwent a serious transformation.

1) Ferries TYCHO BRAHE and AURORA now operate fully on battery power. This makes the route the world’s first high-intensity battery-operated ferry line, with departures for both passengers and transport operations every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day. Crossing takes 20 minutes.

The energy comes from non-fossil fuel sources such as wind, water and solar energy.

2) The shipping company has changed its name into ForSea.

3) The two electric ferries will do more crossings than the other ferries, which will result in a 65% reduction of emissions.

4) The journey across Öresund is also a journey towards zero emissions

Sweden has a long-term climate goal to have a net greenhouse gas by 2045. This goal is something the ferry line wants to reach earlier than that.
