Balearia’s HSC JAUME III To Be Repowered By San Giorgio Del Porto Shipyard

Incat 041 JAUME III is set to be refitted in the port of Genoa, by San Giorgio del Porto Shipyard.

The yard is part of Genova Industrie Navali group, in which Fincantieri is expected to take a minority stake in the near future.

Ettore Morace, managing director of Balearia, confirmed to Ferry Shipping News that, “the JAUME III is to undergo significant works in the engine room. The vessel will be completely repowered, and the four main Ruston engines will be replaced by MTU.”

Price tag: €8 million.

Two years ago, Balearia also repowered JAUME II, to improve its energy efficiency, reliability and service as part of the company’s fleet modernization process

Remotorised RAMON LLULL To Serve The Denia – Formentera Route As From Easter

Balearia’s fast monohull ferry RAMON LLULL got new MTU 20V4000M73L engines, which will increase its speed by 30%.
That will allow her to connect Denia and Formentera in less than two hours.

HYPATIA DE ALEJANDRÍA is Baleària’s first ferry powered by LNG. She recently started sailing between Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca.

The ferry arrived last Sunday night (27 January) at the port of Barcelona, ​​coming from the Visentini shipyard near Venice.

“HYPATIA DE ALEJANDRÍA marks an important milestone both in the history of Baleària and the Mediterranean, being the first passenger ferry powered by natural gas that crosses these waters,” highlighted Baleria’s CEO Adolfo Utor. A second vessel will follow later this year.

The ship is at the forefront of digital technology:

Baleària’s MARIE CURIE is afloat

Cantiere Navale Visentini has launched MARIE CURIE, the second LNG ro-pax for Baleària. Practically all of its structure has been completed. At present 50% of the construction has been exceeded. In addition, both engines and LNG tanks and main equipment are already on board.

HYPATÍA DE ALEJANDRÍA will start operating at the beginning of next year, and the MARIE CURIE a few months later.

  • The Madeira Legislative Assembly is asking the Portuguese Government for a ro-pax service between Lisbon and Funchal, throughout the year, and not only in summer.

Baleària Begins The LNG Conversion Of NAPOLES

NAPOLES is the first of six Baleària ferries to be converted into an LNG-powered ship.
The ro-pax arrived at the Gibdock shipyards in Gibraltar, where the modification of the engines and the installation of the LNG tank will be carried out.

Completion is scheduled for 15 February 2019.

The two current MAN9L48 / 60 engines of the ship will be changed into 9L51/60DF, dual-fuel by MAN Energy Solutions.
Wärtsilä will provide the LNG storage tank (440m3), which will give an autonomy of 1,200 nautical miles.
The gas pipes will be supplied by Cryospain, while the engineering project has been carried out by Cotenaval.

The total investment is EUR 12 million, 20% of which will be paid through the CEF (Connecting Europe Facility) funds of the European Union.

In addition to NAPOLES, Baleària plans to change the engines of ferries ABEL MATUTES, SICILIA, BAHAMA MAMA and MARTIN I SOLER, and other more ferry more without the help of CEF funds.

Baleària Builds World’s First LNG Powered High-Speed Catamaran In Spain

Baleària has ordered the world’s first LNG powered ro-pax high-speed ferry.
The fast ferry is being built at the Armon shipyard in Gijón after an Incat Crowther design.
With a length of 125m and a beam of 28m, the new catamaran will have capacity for 1,200 passengers and 500 cars (or otherwise 500 lane meters freight and 250 cars).
The vessel will be propelled by four Wärtsilä dual-fuel LNG engines delivering 8,800 kW each, allowing it to attain a service speed of 35 knots, and a top speed of over 40 knots.
Range will be 400 nautical miles.
Investment is 90 million euros.  Entry into service summer 2020.

Baleària Fleet Goes The LNG Way

Baleària is also finalising the construction of what will be the first two smart ro-pax ships with LNG engines to sail the Mediterranean. The HYPATIA DE ALEJANDRÍA is scheduled to begin operations early next year, followed by the MARIE CURIE a few months later.

Meanwhile, the first of a total of six ships in the fleet will have its engine replaced this autumn to allow it to sail with LNG. The European Union recently awarded Baleària a grant of some €12 million out of the total investment €72 million.

Within the next three years Baleària plans to have at least half of its ferry fleet using LNG, rising to a 100% of the fleet within ten years.
