Baleària and Boluda Submit Bids for Naviera Armas

By | 2025 Newsletter week 21 | No Comments

Spanish ferry operators Baleària and Boluda Corporación Marítima have submitted non-binding bids to acquire Naviera Armas. The sale process is being managed by investment funds including JP Morgan, Barings, Cheyne, Bain, and Tresidor, who took control of Naviera Armas after capitalizing its debt.

Key Details:

  • Baleària, advised by Deloitte, is bidding for two of the three main operational areas of Naviera Armas: the Canary Islands and the Alboran Sea routes. There is also an option to include the Strait of Gibraltar routes.
  • Boluda, advised by KPMG, has partnered with a group of Canarian investors, including Rodolfo Núñez, president of the airline Binter, as well as companies like Satocan and Astican. Their bid focuses on maintaining and strengthening maritime connections within the Canary Islands.
  • Spanish media also write that DFDS is interested in acquiring a smaller portion of Naviera Armas, specifically targeting the Strait of Gibraltar routes. Also Stena and MSC are sometimes mentioned.
  • The shipping company’s valuation in the sale is estimated at around €200 million.

Trasmediterránea (Balearic routes) was sold to Grimaldi in 2021 and became Grimaldi Trasmed.

On 23 May 2025, Baleària will introduce the high-speed ferry JAUME I to its Tarifa–Tangier Ville route, increasing daily departures from four to six in each direction. The JAUME I has a capacity for over 600 passengers and 150 vehicles. Baleària plans to further increase frequencies to 8–12 daily sailings in the coming weeks, depending on demand.

This expansion follows Baleària’s launch of the route on 8 May 2025, initially operated with the AVEMAR DOS ferry.

Baleària has secured a 15-year concession to operate this route, committing to invest in two zero-emission electric fast ferries by 2027, aiming to establish the first intercontinental green maritime corridor between Europe and Africa.

Baleària Criticises Ibiza Car Access Plan for Lack of Preparation

Just weeks before Ibiza’s planned vehicle access restrictions take effect on 1 June, Baleària warns that the necessary systems—such as a reservation platform, legal framework, and enforcement methods—are still not in place. The ferry company, while supporting the goal of reducing road congestion, has filed for a suspension of the measure, criticising the Island Council’s poor planning and arguing that cars arriving by boat only account for 1.5% of Ibiza’s vehicle fleet during summer.

Tarifa-Tangier Ville Now Operated by Baleària

Baleària started operating the Tarifa-Tangier Ville route on May 8 with the fast ferry AVEMAR DOS. Later, a second vessel will be added.

Earlier, on Sunday May 4, FRS Iberia Maroc / DFDS ended operations on the same route, after 25 years of service.

The company said in a press release it will continue operating its routes between Algeciras-Tangier Med and Algeciras-Ceuta as normal.

DFDS said also it maintains a long-term vision for the region, maintaining service quality and exploring new opportunities for the future.

Baleària is enhancing its summer ferry services between Spain and Algeria, increasing weekly sailings from three to five between 15 June and 15 September. To support the increase in services, two ferries will be deployed, offering amenities such as halal dining, prayer areas, and customer service in Arabic.

Baleària Warns Vehicle Restrictions Could Undermine Ferry Services and Supply Chains to the Balearic Islands

By | 2025 Newsletter week 14 | No Comments

Ferry operator Baleària has raised concerns about proposed limits on vehicle access to the Balearic Islands, warning that such measures could reduce maritime services and disrupt supply chains without solving congestion issues.

President Adolfo Utor argued that maritime transport plays a minimal role in road traffic and is vital for the movement of people and goods. He cautioned that restricting vehicles could make ferry routes less viable, impact local supplies, and shift travellers toward air transport and rental cars, to the detriment of national tourism.

Baleària is urging authorities to seek collaborative, sustainable solutions rather than impose measures that could harm essential ferry connections.

Baleària Strengthens Its Fleet with €300M Investment Amid Expansion and Sustainability Goals

By | 2025 Newsletter week 10 | No Comments

Baleària has reported solid financial results for 2024, with an EBITDA of €130 million, marking an 11% increase from the previous year. This growth was driven by a 6% rise in revenue, reaching €691 million, reinforcing the company’s financial stability. However, net profit fell 36% to €25 million, mainly due to higher depreciation, financing costs, and environmental compliance expenses.

Despite these financial pressures, Baleària tripled its investments to over €300 million, prioritising fleet renewal and efficiency enhancements. The company also announced the appointment of Guillermo Utor as its new vice president and board member.

Expanding Routes and Growing Passenger Traffic

Operating 28 routes across five countries with a fleet of around 40 vessels, Baleària remains a leader in passenger transport, which accounts for 61% of its revenue. In 2024, it carried:

  • 5.6 million passengers (+8%)
  • 1.5 million vehicles (+10%)

The Balearic Islands remain the core market, with 50% of passengers travelling on these routes. The Ceuta connections continue to be the second-most popular, while the Melilla-Málaga route saw the highest growth.

Internationally, Morocco is the key market, contributing 18% of total passengers. This presence is set to grow with the launch of the first green shipping corridor between Tarifa and Tangier Ville. Additionally, Baleària has expanded operations in Algeria, introducing three new routes that performed strongly over the summer.

Freight Business and Strategic Markets

Baleària transported 7.6 million lane metres of cargo in 2024, a 3% increase, playing a vital role in logistics.

  • 60% of cargo traffic is on Balearic routes, maintaining stable volumes in a competitive market.
  • Morocco is emerging as a key freight hub, now representing 30% of total cargo traffic, with strong potential for further growth.

Advancing Sustainability: Lowering Emissions Amid Increased Operations

Despite sailing 1.8 million miles (+1.4%), Baleària reduced its total CO₂ emissions for the first time (excluding pandemic years):

  • 15,000 tonnes less CO₂ (-2%)
  • -3.3% CO₂ per mile
  • -9.5% CO₂ per passenger

These achievements stem from improved operational efficiency and a 184% increase in LNG usage. Baleària is also testing bioLNG, trialling it on its latest vessels, Margarita Salas and Rusadir, as part of its transition towards alternative energy.

Regulatory Challenges and a €1B Investment in Sustainable Shipping

Baleària has committed €1 billion (2017–2028) to a more sustainable fleet, balancing operational excellence with environmental responsibility. However, regulations significantly impact costs:

  • €9M in compliance costs in 2024
  • Expected to rise to €26M in 2025

With the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) now in force, covering 40% of emissions in 2024 and increasing to 70% in 2025, plus upcoming low-carbon fuel mandates and the Mediterranean’s designation as a sulphur emission control area (SECA) from May 2025, Baleària faces escalating financial and operational pressures.

Looking Ahead: New Ships and International Expansion

Baleària is investing in new shipbuilding projects:

  • A third high-tech LNG-powered catamaran, launching in late 2025.
  • Two fully electric fast ferries for the Tarifa-Tangier Ville route, ensuring zero-emission operations.

The company is also expanding internationally, with plans to strengthen its Algerian network and introduce a Dominican Republic–Puerto Rico route.

One More Route Between Spain and Algeria

By | 2025 Newsletter week 04 | No Comments

Baleària launched a new RoPax ferry route from the port of Barcelona to Algiers, which is the company’s first international line from the port of the Catalan capital.

The company currently offers four routes to Algeria:

  • Barcelona-Algiers
  • Valencia-Algiers
  • Valencia-Oran
  • Valencia-Mostaganem

Baleària has been operating on Algeria since 2016, when it opened its first Valencia-Mostaganem route. Last October, it began operating between Valencia and Algiers, and in December between Valencia and Oran.

The Algerian routes become highly competitive with several European ferry companies offering services, against a weakened state-owned Algérie Ferries.
