Baleària Highlights Refrigerated Cargo at Fruit Attraction

  • Refrigerated products, mainly fruits and vegetables, account for 35% of Baleària’s cargo in the Balearic Islands and 25% in Morocco.

  • Cargo Director Maximiliano Bermejo stressed Baleària’s commitment to the agri-food sector, underlining speed and reliability as key values.
  • Total freight traffic rose 11% between January and August 2025 compared to last year.
  • Growth was seen in the Balearics, Morocco, and Algeria, supported by new Barcelona–Algiers and Barcelona–Oran services.
  • Baleària will also present innovation and sustainability projects to reduce the carbon footprint of fresh produce shipping.

Baleària Introduces Regular Use of BioLNG

  • Since September, MARGARITA SALAS, ABEL MATUTES and RUSADIR run exclusively on renewable bioGNL.
  • Baleària sourced 132 GWh of bioLNG, enough for carbon-neutral sailing until December 2025.
  • This represents 13% of the LNG consumed by the fleet in 2024.
  • The use of bioGNL between September and December avoids 80,300 tonnes of CO₂ – equivalent to removing 153,500 cars from the road or planting 160,650 trees.
  • BioLNG is produced from livestock waste, capturing methane and converting it into energy, with GHG savings above 200% compared to fossil fuels.
  • Baleària is the first European ferry operator to receive ISCC EU certification, guaranteeing traceability and sustainability of biofuels.
  • The certification strengthens Baleària’s position as a pioneer in maritime decarbonisation.

Stena Line Secures 50-Year Agreement in Frederikshavn

  • Stena Line has signed a historic 50-year deal with the Municipality of Frederikshavn to operate the RoPax ferry terminal.
  • The agreement secures the company’s long-term presence in North Jutland and expands its operating rights within the port.
  • Stena Line will also act as negotiating partner for external customers needing port services.
  • The deal aligns with Stena Line’s wider strategic investments, including the planned relocation of its Gothenburg terminals to Arendal.
  • The Gothenburg–Frederikshavn route is currently served by STENA DANICA and STENA JUTLANDICA with 3–4 daily departures.

Sweden Plans Record Infrastructure Investments

  • The budget increases by SEK 200 billion to SEK 1,171 billion.

    • Clearing the road maintenance backlog by 2037.

    • Investments in 2+1 roads and private roads.
    • More rest areas.
    • Actions supporting fossil-free transport and security policy demands.
  • Sveriges Åkeriföretag welcomes the plan, stressing the importance of improved road capacity and municipal involvement.

Stena Line Cuts 35 Tons of Meat With New 50/50 Meatballs

Stena Line is replacing half of the meat in its onboard meatballs with yellow pea mince, cutting annual meat use by 35 tons across 2.5 million servings. The change significantly lowers the carbon footprint per portion, from an estimated 4.9 kg CO₂e to 1.3 kg CO₂e, while keeping the same taste and quality. A small change on the plate – a big step for sustainability at sea.

Ålands Folkrederi Denied EU Funding for Hybrid Ferry Project

  • Ålands Folkrederi’s application for €86,400 in ERDF funding has been rejected.
  • The grant was intended to cover half the cost of a project manager from September 2025 to March 2026.
  • Former Viking Line technical director Kaj Jansson was set to lead development of a building specification for a planned battery-hybrid ferry.
  • The group, so far working voluntarily, estimated the specification could be finalised in seven months.
