Baleària Begins The LNG Conversion Of NAPOLES

NAPOLES is the first of six Baleària ferries to be converted into an LNG-powered ship.
The ro-pax arrived at the Gibdock shipyards in Gibraltar, where the modification of the engines and the installation of the LNG tank will be carried out.

Completion is scheduled for 15 February 2019.

The two current MAN9L48 / 60 engines of the ship will be changed into 9L51/60DF, dual-fuel by MAN Energy Solutions.
Wärtsilä will provide the LNG storage tank (440m3), which will give an autonomy of 1,200 nautical miles.
The gas pipes will be supplied by Cryospain, while the engineering project has been carried out by Cotenaval.

The total investment is EUR 12 million, 20% of which will be paid through the CEF (Connecting Europe Facility) funds of the European Union.

In addition to NAPOLES, Baleària plans to change the engines of ferries ABEL MATUTES, SICILIA, BAHAMA MAMA and MARTIN I SOLER, and other more ferry more without the help of CEF funds.

LBG To Power Hurtigruten Ships

By 2018 Newsletter week 47

By 2021, Hurtigruten plans to operate at least six of its ships on a combination of biogas, LNG and large battery packs.

The company will introduce liquified biogas (LBG), which is a fossil-free, renewable gas produced from dead fish and other organic waste.

Biogas is already used as fuel in small parts of the transport sector, especially in buses. Northern Europe and Norway, which has large fishery and forestry sectors that produces a steady volume of organic waste, has a unique opportunity to become world leader in biogas production.

Note from the editor: Interestingly Hurtigruten uses several times the word ‘cruise ship’ in its communication. Not so long ago the word ‘cruise’ was something they preferred not to be associated with. They always referred to the ‘coastal voyage’.

By 2018 Newsletter week 47

Indirectly it has been announced by the president of the Cantabria region that Brittany Ferries will get another ferry berth in two years time.

President Miguel Angel Revilla has been under attack for the fence dividing the actual ferry port and the city waterfront. This fence is against stowaways. It will be risen by 4m.

However with the plan to move the ferries from the Maritime Station to Tabacalera will allow for a full revitalization of Santander’s waterfront.

Sinterklaas Has Arrived In IJmuiden

Sinterklaas (in Dutch) or Sint-Nicolaas has arrived in Ijmuiden on 17 November.
Why do we show you the patron saint of children?
Because it was Ferry Shipping Summit’s co-organizer Frans Baud who played the role of the saint. Would you have recognized him with his white beard, bishop’s alb and mitre?
This is a typical tradition of the low countries (The Netheralnds, Belgium).
The tradition says Saint-Nicolas arrives by ship from Spain.

Corsica: One Of The Three Candidates Rejected For… For What?

Last week we wrote that three ferry companies were competing for the Public Service Delegation contract: Corsica Ferries, Corsica Linea and CMN/La Mériodionale.

The OTC (Office des Transports Corse) who has to take the decision, rejected one offer. After some speculation in the press, Lota Maritime SA (Corsica Ferries) was eventually informed officially on Wednesday 14 November that their offer was rejected because of non-conformity.

The company is criticized for not having complied with the requested digital format, which was required in addition to the paper version.

In a television interview with France 3, Lota Maritime’s CEO Pierre Mattei says he “nearly fell from his chair when he got the news.”

He said that even if the digital information would have been missing (which he denies), the OTC could still see the enclosed paper version.

Mr Mattei concludes the interview by saying his lawyers will examine the case.

ForSea Is The New Name For HH Ferries

By 2018 Newsletter Week 46

HH Ferries, the operator linking Denmark and Sweden via Helsingør and Helsingborg, underwent a serious transformation.

1) Ferries TYCHO BRAHE and AURORA now operate fully on battery power. This makes the route the world’s first high-intensity battery-operated ferry line, with departures for both passengers and transport operations every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day. Crossing takes 20 minutes.

The energy comes from non-fossil fuel sources such as wind, water and solar energy.

2) The shipping company has changed its name into ForSea.

3) The two electric ferries will do more crossings than the other ferries, which will result in a 65% reduction of emissions.

4) The journey across Öresund is also a journey towards zero emissions

Sweden has a long-term climate goal to have a net greenhouse gas by 2045. This goal is something the ferry line wants to reach earlier than that.

The pictures below were taken on the inauguration ceremony of the new battery ferries in Helsingborg on 9 November.
