Inaugural Rail Freight Shipment from Poland to Ystad

On March 5, 2025, the good cooperation between Unity Line, Swinoujscie Ferry Terminal, Port of Ystad together with DB Cargo and VÄTE resulted in the transhipping of steel rail from ArcelorMittal to Sweden.

The ferry POLONIA arrived on time in Ystad, Wednesday evening 5 March, with 26 waggons and approx. 800 tons of steel.

This operation marked the first transshipment of such an unusual rail transport between Świnoujście and Ystad, demonstrating new possibilities for freight logistics between Poland and Sweden.

Start of Finnlines’ new route between Sweden and Poland

Finnlines’ new daily maritime bridge between Sweden and Poland started on 10 April 2024.

Route: Malmö, Sweden – Świnoujście, Poland

Ship: RoPax Finnfellow (Swedish flag) – 440 pax – 3,000 lane metres

Antonio Raimo, Line Manager at Finnlines:

“The launch of a new route will benefit Swedish and Polish exports and imports and expands Finnlines’ operations outside Finland, as well as confirming Finnlines commitment to Polish security of supply by calling both the port of Gdynia and soon the port of Świnoujście. We have already strengthened the shore organization and opened an office in Świnoujście.”

Port Of Ystad Continues To Strengthen Links With Poland

Port of Ystad’s good relationship with Poland was further strengthened by the visit of CEO Björn Boström to Deputy Maritime Minister Grzegorz Witkowski in Warsaw.
The Swedish town is expanding its ferry port, which will benefit the connection to Świnoujście, and the Polferries newbuildings.
Ystad has been very good in bringing all politicians and actors together, in order to become a major port on the axe Sweden-Poland-Europe.
Import from Sweden to Poland is expected to increase by 27% by 2020, and export from Sweden to Poland by 40%. (Source: Gdynia Maritime Academy)
