Ferry Passengers Increasing (+4%) And Ro-Ro Decreasing (-1%) In The Port Of Ancona

In 2018, 1,151,266 passengers were handled in the port of Ancona, 6% more compared with the year before, and 1,084,235 of those were transported by ferries (+4%).

More in detail:

  • 771,874 passengers (+1%) Ancona – Igoumenitsa – Patras
  • 221,446 (+7%) Ancona – Split (Croatia)
  • 90,832 (+29%) Ancona – Durres (Albania).

The ferry companies active in the port of Ancona are Minoan Lines, Superfast Ferries and Anek Lines (to and from Greece), Grandi Navi Veloci and Adria Ferries (to and from Albania) and Jadrolinija and Snav (to and from Croatia).

As for the ro-ro traffic, 147,650 trucks and trailers were handled in the port in 2018, which means a 1% decrease compared with the previous year.

Adria Ferries Bought Ro-Pax CALIFORNIA STAR From Baja Ferries

The Italian company Adria Ferries has just sealed the purchase of a sister ship of the AF MICHELA (see photo), chartered from the Vietnamese owner Vinashin Lines and currently deployed on the Ancona – Durres (Albania) maritime link.

Alberto Rossi, head of Frittelli Maritime group and of Adria Ferries, announced this week the purchase for USD 45 million of a sister ship of the AF MICHELA.

According to some ship brokers the ro-pax in question is CALIFORNIA STAR, built in 2001 by Cantiere Navale Visentini, owned by Baja Ferries and today active in Central America between the Mexican port of Topolobampo, and Pichilingue in Ecuador.

  • CLdN decided to introduce an additional ro-ro –ADELINE– on the Rotterdam-London service. From each port there will be two extra sailings per week.
  • GNV’s ro-pax ferry LA SUPREMA made a transatlantic crossing, and is now in San Juan, the capital of Maria-ravaged Puerto Rico. She is acting as a relief ship after the hurricane.
  • CMA CGM will bring in STENA CARRIER and ARK FORWARDER for their new Morocco Express service (see Ferry Shipping News, week 37). These two Stena RoRo ships have a capacity of about 2,700 lane meter.
  • Stena’s former TRELLEBORG, operating as SUNNY between the islands of Qeshm (Iran), has been sold for scrap.
  • Ro-pax STENA EGERIA arrived in Durrës on October 8. She has been chartered by Adria Ferries for one year, from Stena RoRo. She replaces the BRIDGE, which was spotted in Port Suez on October 10. STENA EGERIA has been renamed AF MICHELA.
  • ABB is going to provide an Azipod propulsion system for the new Viking Line cruise ferry to be built in China, the first installation of Azipod propulsion in a cruise-ferry application.
  • Ship2Shore reports that the Onorato Group (Moby/Tirrenia) is aiming at a sale & lease back contract with foreign investors, to cash money from MOBY TOMMY, JANAS, BITHIA and ATHARA.
