PHOTOS OF THE WEEK

Thank you Alistair Eagles (Seatruck Ferries) for sharing with us this picture of one of your vessels being prepared for its new charterers. The painters seem to have some sense of humor.

Fred. Olsen Express and Baleària, through its alliance Canary Bridge Seaways, will launch the new route between the Canary Islands and Huelva on 11 November with CLIPPER PENNANT.

Is the coaster GULF ANGEL having a project cargo? Is it transporting an oversized model of MOBY AKI? No, this optical illusion has been perfectly captured by Swiss Shipping & Cruise/Ferry Analyst Thomas P. Illes, in the port of Livorno. Well spotted!

Clémence Cavelier-Bekaert (Sales Assistant NCG) took this wonderful, foggy photo of PONT-AVEN. Merci beaucoup!

It’s a little over one month until Brittany Ferries new HONFLEUR is launched from the slipway at the FSG shipyard. Brice Robinson, Engineer Newbuilding, took this and other pictures, which can be seen here.

Baleària Builds World’s First LNG Powered High-Speed Catamaran In Spain

By 2018 Newsletter week 44

Baleària has ordered the world’s first LNG powered ro-pax high-speed ferry.
The fast ferry is being built at the Armon shipyard in Gijón after an Incat Crowther design.
With a length of 125m and a beam of 28m, the new catamaran will have capacity for 1,200 passengers and 500 cars (or otherwise 500 lane meters freight and 250 cars).
The vessel will be propelled by four Wärtsilä dual-fuel LNG engines delivering 8,800 kW each, allowing it to attain a service speed of 35 knots, and a top speed of over 40 knots.
Range will be 400 nautical miles.
Investment is 90 million euros.  Entry into service summer 2020.

Baleària Fleet Goes The LNG Way

By 2018 Newsletter week 44

Baleària is also finalising the construction of what will be the first two smart ro-pax ships with LNG engines to sail the Mediterranean. The HYPATIA DE ALEJANDRÍA is scheduled to begin operations early next year, followed by the MARIE CURIE a few months later.

Meanwhile, the first of a total of six ships in the fleet will have its engine replaced this autumn to allow it to sail with LNG. The European Union recently awarded Baleària a grant of some €12 million out of the total investment €72 million.

Within the next three years Baleària plans to have at least half of its ferry fleet using LNG, rising to a 100% of the fleet within ten years.

The highly energy-efficient vessels will operate normally on battery power at a service speed of 10 knots. When required, they can run on combined battery-diesel hybrid backup modes.
