As announced earlier [Ferry Shipping News, 13 January 2023], Kanellos Brothers Shipyard at Perama (Greece) recently undertook the start of construction of a double-ended ferry on behalf of the Italian Bluferries, which is a subsidiary of the Italian state railway group, Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane S.p.A.

The design of the ship has been carried out by the Greek office C & T Perdikaris Naval Bureau.

Bluferries is implementing a fleet renewal program through the Greek shipyards and the new ferry will be a sister ship to SIKANIA (2021), which was built by the same yard. The ship will be hybrid (diesel & batteries) and will have a RINA classification.

She is expected to be delivered in 2024.

Ropax SANTOÑA, the second LNG-powered vessel after SALAMANCA, has joined the Brittany Ferries fleet on Thursday 26 January 2023.

This e-Flexer and 11th vessel in the Brittany Ferries will enter service on 1 March 2023 and will operate on the Cherbourg/Portsmouth and Portsmouth/Santander routes.

“Today, we reaffirm our eco-responsible commitment by flying it the French flag and operating it with French sailors,” said Jean-Marc Roué, Chairman of the Brittany Ferries Supervisory Board.

“At this time, bookings are more than 20% higher compared to the same period in 2022. We look forward to building on this momentum. Next year, our rail project between Bayonne and Cherbourg will strengthen our position on the freight market. This launch will be followed, at the end of 2024, by the delivery of two hybrid vessels, which will join the fleet in 2025.”

Shipbreaking Platform publishes list of ships dismantled worldwide in 2022

By | 2023 Newsletter week 5 | No Comments

According to new data released by the NGO Shipbreaking Platform, 443 ocean-going commercial ships and offshore units were sold for scrapping in 2022.

Of these, 292 large tankers, bulkers, floating platforms, cargo- and passenger ships ended up for dirty and dangerous breaking on tidal beaches in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan.

Whilst the South Asian shipbreaking yards experienced the lowest turnover in over a decade, with a significant drop in terms of the number of ships scrapped, they remained the preferred destination for end-of-life vessels, dismantling 80% of the global end-of-life gross tonnage.

The reasons for the plunge in the number of vessels scrapped in 2022 are multiple, with high ocean freight rates that made it profitable to continue operating older vessels and banks’ shortages in providing credits to companies for the purchase of end-of-life assets identified as the main drivers.

Looking ahead

Looking ahead, the number of ships that will need to be dismantled is expected to surge. At the same time, the growing focus on circularity and the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions provide opportunities to transform the ship recycling sector. Already, forward-looking governments are developing policies to increase access to scrap steel for green steel production, coupling that with measures to encourage the development of sustainable ship recycling capacity.

The European Union’s Green Deal is pushing major steel companies to explore ways of integrating ship recycling in their production line.

The complete renovation of the 1974-built ferry terminal built has begun, says the website of Port of Naantali.

The goal of the renovation is to bring the building to a level equivalent to a new building, for example in terms of functionality and energy efficiency.

In addition, the just-completed geothermal contract enables the premises to be heated and cooled using geothermal energy.

In August 2023, the 1st floor of the terminal building will be completed, which will serve as the departure and arrival lobby for foot passengers as from September.

The other facilities will be completed in the spring of 2024.

New offices will be offered for rent, also to potential new operators.

The first of Finnlines’ Superstar class ships, FINNSIRIUS, was launched already in August 2022. The two new ferries will operate from Naantali to Kapellskär.  (photo: Finnlines)

Portsmouth’s shore power facilities will be ready for the Brittany Ferries hybrids

Portsmouth says on its website it is officially on track to become the UK’s leading shore power port, following confirmation it will accept an offer from Scottish and Southern Energy Network (SSEN) to secure extra power.

“In under two years we’ll be able to support multiple ships that have capacity to plug-in when they’re alongside the berth, reducing harmful emissions from running engines and meeting net carbon neutral ambitions ahead of the government’s 2030 target.”

The extra capacity from SSEN will provide an initial 15MVA, which starts the process of providing shore power through to the berths where the ships can plug-in. Installation will be completed by 2025, in time for major customer Brittany Ferries, who has two new hybrid ships which will operate from Portsmouth the same year, with the remaining fleet being converted to shore power by early 2027.
