Gotland Tech Development has joined a Hydrogen Europe initiative backed by 170 companies calling on the European Commission to retain the Renewable Energy Directive’s targets for renewable hydrogen and other e-fuels. According to Gotlandsbolaget’s article, published on 22 October, a leaked draft suggests these targets could be removed.
The company warns that weakening the requirements could undermine investment in fuel production and infrastructure. The joint letter states that more than EUR 15 billion has already been earmarked for European projects, with over 4 GW of electrolyser capacity under construction.
For shipping, the concern is future fuel availability. Gotland Horizon X is designed for hydrogen use, but this depends on reliable supplies at competitive prices. Henry Hammarström, senior energy and climate strategist at Gotland Tech Development, argues that the sector needs stable, long-term rules to support investment. The potential removal of the targets remains a reported proposal, rather than an adopted change.
