Five Moby Ferries Sold to MSC in Antitrust-Linked Transaction

By | 2025 Newsletter week 49 | No Comments

The tender for the sale of MOBY AKI, MOBY WONDER, ATHARA, JANAS, and MOBY ALE 2 was concluded this week. The lot was awarded for €229.9m to the MSC Group, acting through Luxembourg-based SAS. (see Fallco Aste portal ).

The sale forms part of the agreement between SAS (MSC Group), Moby, and GNV to resolve concerns raised by the Italian Antitrust Authority about potential cartel behaviour on services between mainland Italy and Sardinia. The proceeds will be used to repay the €243m loan provided by MSC/SAS. If the proceeds do not fully cover the loan, the remaining credit will be transferred to an independent third party under conditions that protect Moby’s financial stability.

For MOBY AKI and MOBY WONDER, the transaction takes the form of a sale-and-leaseback. Moby will charter both ships for fifteen years. The charter requires the vessels to retain their names and to continue sailing under the Italian flag.

ATHARA, JANAS, and MOBY ALE 2 are expected to join the GNV fleet once the transfer is completed. Their deployment has not yet been announced, but they are likely to strengthen GNV’s capacity on domestic and Mediterranean routes.

The award closes a key chapter in Moby’s restructuring process and clarifies the future of five important vessels in the Italian ferry market.

Molslinjen Orders Third Battery-Powered Megacatamaran

By | 2025 Newsletter week 49 | No Comments

Molslinjen has ordered its third battery-powered catamaran for the Kattegat routes. The vessel will again be built by Incat in Tasmania, which is already constructing the first two ships. Together, the three vessels form what is described as the world’s largest electrification project at sea.

The new order covers a 129-metre emissions-free catamaran for the busy link between Jutland and Zealand. Molslinjen highlights the benefits of building all three ferries at the same yard, including shared learning and continuity. “It has been important for us to have a stable and solid supplier,” says Kristian Durhuus, CEO of Molslinjen.

The total investment for the three ferries and the associated shore infrastructure amounts to DKK 3.5bn. The project recently secured DKK 180m in national investment support. Durhuus says the company and its owners want to lead the transition to greener technology, noting that these solutions were not available only a few years ago.

The three ferries will fully electrify Molslinjen’s Kattegat operation. Deployment will take place as each vessel arrives in Denmark: the first in late 2027, the second in summer 2028, and the third in spring 2029.
