Damen Shipyard’s Ferries For Ontario Will Be Electric

The Government of Ontario has accepted Damen Shipyard’s proposal to build two ferries with full electric propulsion, automatic mooring and automatic charging.
Damen is building a Road Ferry 6819 and a Road Ferry 9819 (68 metres and 98 metres respectively) to operate in the Canadian waters of the Great Lakes.
Finding environmental solutions was part of the tender process.

Italian Anti-trust authority says two ferry companies hindered competition

Italian Anti-Trust Authority has fined two Onorato Group companies, Moby and Tirrenia, for abusing their dominant position in Sardinia, writes Infomarine.net.
The investigation followed a complaint filed by Trans-Isole, Grimaldi, Grendi and Lucianu.

Interferry Voices Fire Safety Concerns At Imo

Interferry Security Committee Urges France To Pause Screening Plan

Interferry has written to the French administration regarding their plans for the on-board security screening of ferry passengers between vehicle decks and the accommodation areas.
In Interferry’s view, vehicle decks are not a safe environment to harbour large number of passengers in transition to the stairways – such an accumulation would increase the risk of accidents, inhibit effective evacuation and limit the scope for protection from an armed attack.

Balearia will operate FINNCLIPPER in May, when the ro-pax vessel is being replaced by FINNSWANN. FINNCLIPPER currently operates on Naantali – Kappelskär.

High-speed catamaran LEONORA CHRISTINA will be renamed BUGANVILLA EXPRESS when taken over by Fred.Olsen from Færgen.

BORE BAY will replace ELISABETH RUSS on Stena’s route between Gdynia and Nynäshamn, as from April.

Jadrolinija has decided to order a smaller ferry than originally planned. The new design foresees 900 pax instead of 1500, and 200 cars. This will reduce the price considerably.

Torghatten is ready for the new concessions and the new ferries

Torghatten, the Norwegian group with ferry, bus and air transport (Widerœ) has published the 2017 report.
January 2017 was the start of a new 10-year licensing period for the Horten – Moss route. Traffic development has been good, and all three new ferries have worked without major operational interruptions.
In Helgeland, a new plug-in hybrid ferry was delivered for the Tjøtta – Forvik route.
The group has won two major contracts, which start on 1 January 2019.
These are the ferry connections Halhjem – Sandvikvåg (E39, Hordaland) and Flakk – Rørvik (Trøndelag). Torhatten has 7 ferries under construction for these connections.
Torghatten also signed a contract for the continuation of the operations on Bognes -Scarberget and Drag – Kjøpsvik for the period 2018 to 2021. Here the ferries are upgraded to plug-in hybrid systems.

Five ferries are built in Turkey, with a gas-electric propulsion plant including a battery pack, and two are being built in Norway, also with gas-electric proplusion.
