The European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) has submitted its contribution to the public consultation in preparation of the new Connecting Europe Facility (CEF II) for the financial period 2021-2028. To prepare its submission, ESPO commissioned a study to investigate the future investment needs of European ports, as well as the past ability of ports to benefit from the different EU financial instruments.

The study will be officially presented at the forthcoming ESPO conference “Investing in the port of tomorrow” taking place on 31 May and 1 June in Rotterdam.

We have the pleasure to welcoming Mr Eamonn O’reilly, Chairman of the ESPO, at the Ferry Shipping Summit. Mr O’Reilly has been serving as Chief Executive of the Dublin Port Company since 2010.

Brodosplit Wants To Build Two Dry Docks

Brodosplit has asked geotechnical researcher Geotech to investigate how to build two dry docks in Split, Croatia.
The docks are primarily intended for the construction of new ships, and it is envisaged that there will be used for the construction of yachts, ferries and cruise ships.
One dock will be 200m long, the other one 100m. The latter should be covered with a roof.
Currently no shipyard in Croatia has dry docks for shipbuilding, except for some floating dry docks.
After the completion of the investigations, the necessary permits will be obtained. Construction will take up to three years.

SHORT NEWS

By 2018 Newsletter week 11
  • One of ferry operator CalMac’s longest serving vessels is retiring from west coast service. RAASAY served the Sconser to Raasay route for 21 years from her launch in 1976 until increased traffic from the island made her unsuitable. She was the last of eight ‘Island class’ ferries launched and is capable of carrying six cars and up to 75 passengers. RAASAY has now been handed back to owner Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) who are expected to announce a buyer for the vessel shortly.
  • FRS-owned AL ANDALUS EXPRESS, former NORD PAS-DE-CALAIS, has been chartered to ARMAS. She is needed as a replacement for a number of drydockings.
  • Ro-pax ferry ANDREAS KALVOS from Zante Ferries has been sold to Kefalonian Lines.
  • Ro-pax IONIAN SKY, laid up since a very long time, has been sold at auction to a Cypriot company.
  • The Kiel – Oslo ferry COLOR MAGIC got fined because of a multiple breach of the sulphur regulations. The measurements were done in Denmark, on the Great Belt Bridge. Color Line does not agree with the fine (of NOK 600,000) and filed a complaint. Apparently technical issues were at the basis of the problem, like malfunctioning exhaust analysers and a lack of water intake due to obstructions caused by shells.
  • Irish Ferries’ JONATHAN SWIFT is to be renamed CECILIA PAYNE for Baleària. She will enter service on June 1, between Denia and Ibiza – Palma.

Fincantieri To Lenghten Two Grimaldi Cruise Ferries

Fincantieri and the Grimaldi Group have signed a letter of intent for the lengthening of CRUISE ROMA and CRUISE BARCELONA.
The construction of the sections that will be inserted in the ships will begin in 2018, while the end of the operations is expected by the summer of 2019.
The work will be done on the Palermo site, which has a great experience in such jobs (MSC Cruises, Silversea…)
Their length will change from 225m to 254m. The lane meters will improve from 3,000 to 3,700. Passenger capacity will jump from 3,000 to 3,500.

Reducing environmental impact and energy savings will be achieved by scrubbers and a system of mega lithium batteries, to power the ship during port calls.
