Baleària Begins The LNG Conversion Of NAPOLES

NAPOLES is the first of six Baleària ferries to be converted into an LNG-powered ship.
The ro-pax arrived at the Gibdock shipyards in Gibraltar, where the modification of the engines and the installation of the LNG tank will be carried out.

Completion is scheduled for 15 February 2019.

The two current MAN9L48 / 60 engines of the ship will be changed into 9L51/60DF, dual-fuel by MAN Energy Solutions.
Wärtsilä will provide the LNG storage tank (440m3), which will give an autonomy of 1,200 nautical miles.
The gas pipes will be supplied by Cryospain, while the engineering project has been carried out by Cotenaval.

The total investment is EUR 12 million, 20% of which will be paid through the CEF (Connecting Europe Facility) funds of the European Union.

In addition to NAPOLES, Baleària plans to change the engines of ferries ABEL MATUTES, SICILIA, BAHAMA MAMA and MARTIN I SOLER, and other more ferry more without the help of CEF funds.

Baleària Builds World’s First LNG Powered High-Speed Catamaran In Spain

Baleària has ordered the world’s first LNG powered ro-pax high-speed ferry.
The fast ferry is being built at the Armon shipyard in Gijón after an Incat Crowther design.
With a length of 125m and a beam of 28m, the new catamaran will have capacity for 1,200 passengers and 500 cars (or otherwise 500 lane meters freight and 250 cars).
The vessel will be propelled by four Wärtsilä dual-fuel LNG engines delivering 8,800 kW each, allowing it to attain a service speed of 35 knots, and a top speed of over 40 knots.
Range will be 400 nautical miles.
Investment is 90 million euros.  Entry into service summer 2020.

Baleària Fleet Goes The LNG Way

Baleària is also finalising the construction of what will be the first two smart ro-pax ships with LNG engines to sail the Mediterranean. The HYPATIA DE ALEJANDRÍA is scheduled to begin operations early next year, followed by the MARIE CURIE a few months later.

Meanwhile, the first of a total of six ships in the fleet will have its engine replaced this autumn to allow it to sail with LNG. The European Union recently awarded Baleària a grant of some €12 million out of the total investment €72 million.

Within the next three years Baleària plans to have at least half of its ferry fleet using LNG, rising to a 100% of the fleet within ten years.

  • Funds to come from Connect Europe (CEF).
  • Balearia’s budget = €75 million.
  • The EC has reduced the amount eligible to subsidize at €59 million, which means a subsidy of 11,7 million.

Balearia Has Been Listed For Puerto Rico Tender

The Puerto Rico Government has started a Public-Private Partnership project that seeks viable and efficient alternatives to provide the transportation services to the island municipalities of Vieques and Culebra and between Cataño and San Juan.

Five proponents were interested in taking part in the procurement process.

Europe Opens The Door To Recover The Motor of the Sea Link Between Gijón And Nantes

The EU approves Baleària’s project to operate a ferry service between Gijón and Nantes.

Baleària presented a project in cooperation with the ports of Gijón, Nantes and Valencia and the company Gas Natural Fenosa.

The ferry company would receive EUR 12 million for the conversion of one of their ships into a LNG-power.

Baleària will now have to decide which ship.

Baleària and Fred.Olsen Express Start Canary Bridge Seaways Project

Canary Bridge Seaways (CBS): Baleària and Fred. Olsen Express have agreed to operate new routes between the Iberian Peninsula and the Canary Islands.

  • When:  starting in mid-November.
  • What: Two ships, Three connections /week, for passengers, cars and freight.
  • Why: the two companies take advantage of the vacuum left by Trasmediterránea as a result of the limits set by the CNMC (National Commission of Markets and Competition) for the merger with Armas. Armas had to give up some routes to be allowed to acquire Trasmediterranea. FRS already started to operate a ferry service between Huelva and the Canary Islands with VOLCAN DEL TEIDE on 7 July 2018.

Two Balearia Visentini Ro-Pax Ships To Be Converted Into LNG Dual-Fuel

MAN PrimeServ, the after-sales division of MAN Energy Solutions, has won the contract to convert two ro-pax ferries from Baleària to dual-fuel operation.
Sister ships, the NAPOLES and SICILIA, are currently each powered by 2 × MAN 9L48/60A main engines, which will all be converted to 9L51/60DF units that will enable running on LNG.

The conversion of the NÁPOLES is due to take place in Spain between November 2018 and January 2019, with the conversion of SICILIA to take place from October to December 2019.

Baleària Purchase Ro-Pax VISEMAR ONE

Baleària has invested close to EUR 55 million in the acquisition of the Visentini ro-pax VISEMAR ONE, which has been sailing for the company for seven years. She started in 2011 on the Barcelona-Palma route, and currently operates between Valencia and Palma. Her large cargo intake of 2,860 lane meters makes her very efficient for the Mallorca lifeline route.

Baleària currently has 30 vessels in its fleet, 26 of which are owned. The shipping company is building two LNG-powered ferries at the same Visentini yard, and
it has the intention to convert five existing ferries into LNG powered ships.

Two “other” projects are also on the shelf.
